Responsibilities


The Facilities Manager ensures that the Faculty of Science provides a safe, functional, and supportive environment for research, teaching, learning and working and that the infrastructure and buildings are in proper working condition and available for faculty, staff and students. The role provides leadership in the planning and coordination of capital projects, renovations, and preventative maintenance across multiple buildings and laboratories, ensuring infrastructure is aligned with strategic priorities. The Manager also leads and directs the work of others, oversees space utilization, building security, and emergency preparedness, while championing a strong culture of health and safety. As the primary liaison for facilities-related matters, the Manager provides expert guidance, collaborates with internal and external stakeholders, and ensures compliance with relevant legislation and institutional policies.

Qualifications


Education:

  • Undergraduate Degree in a relevant field (e.g. Facilities Management, Science, Engineering, etc.)
  • Formal training or coursework in Occupational Health and Safety and Project Management
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification, or equivalent, would be an asset

Experience:

  • 5 years of experience in facilities management within a research-intensive academic or institutional environment
  • 2 years of supervisory experience, including leading staff and managing facilities-related projects
  • Demonstrated experience collaborating with diverse stakeholders (e.g., contractors, faculty, principal investigators) on capital planning and renovations
  • Experience with the development of strategic space and capital plans
  • Experience working on and with health and safety committees
  • Experience managing emergency response or business continuity planning preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of regulations and guidelines governing research in an academic environment
  • Knowledge of Ontario Building Code and Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act guidelines and regulations
  • Understanding of capital planning, space allocation, and renovation processes in institutional settings
  • Familiarity with best practices for handling sensitive and confidential information
  • Familiarity with common project obstacles and necessary controls and contingency plans that will help address them
  • Knowledge of best practices in building a strong collaborative team and leading people
  • Knowledge of financial budgeting and principles, Human Resources principles and practices, Employment Standards Act and other relevant legislation
  • Project management skills to champion a project from conception to completion, and to ensure that team roles are clear, milestones are communicated, and deadlines are met
  • Ability to ensure expenditures and resources are within allotments, and to make appropriate modifications when required
  • Ability to promote individual growth by encouraging others to learn new skills and develop themselves
  • Ability to quickly re-allocate resources and adjust priorities in response to unexpected events or changing circumstances
  • Advanced judgment, analytical and problem-solving skills with a consultative and collaborative approach to addressing issues and opportunities
  • Results-oriented with the ability to motivate and coach employees to meet high performance standards, while working effectively as a member of the team
  • Influential interpersonal skills that build positive and strong relationships at all levels of the organization

  • Intermediate computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite and with space management software and project tracking tools
  • Possess a reputation for resourcefulness with a strong sense of accountability and initiative
