We’re looking for a Director, Data Science to work on a major consumer goods client. Candidates must reside in a commutable distance to Mars United Commerce's hub location in Toronto.
Part of the overall Analytics Group, the Data Science team is responsible for all data modeling, algorithm development, and creating machine learning and AI models. They develop techniques such as regression, classification, clustering, natural language processing (NLP), and more. Additionally, they focus on marketing analytics, using advanced data science techniques to analyze marketing performance, optimize campaigns, and provide actionable insights to enhance marketing effectiveness.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Director of Data Science will oversee highly technical work, and this role requires strong technical data science skills and the ability to interact with multiple clients with experience of 8+ years. In this role you will be able to identify issues, use data to propose solutions, and clearly convey how to leverage data-driven results for effective decision-making. More specifically, in this role you will:
- Uphold and implement the strategic vision for the analytics function.
- Lead and manage a group of data scientists, providing mentorship, guidance, and
- professional development opportunities.
- Collaborate with senior cross-functional leaders to identify areas of opportunity for Data
- Science and Analytics growth within clients and new business prospects.
- Collaborate with senior stakeholders to understand business requirements, formulate
- problem statements and translate them into actionable data science projects and solutions.
- Demonstrate, with a proven track record, superior skills with data modeling and data
- analytics tools, such as Azure SQL, Azure Synapse, Power BI, Looker, etc.
- Develop and optimize machine learning models by processing, analyzing, and extracting data
- from varying internal and external data sources.
- Identify and engineer relevant features to enhance model performance and accuracy.
- Design and implement robust evaluation metrics and frameworks to assess and monitor the
- performance of machine learning models.
- Ensure the accuracy and reliability of data through rigorous QA processes.
- Validate model outputs to ensure they meet business requirements.
- Conduct unit tests and validation checks on data and models.
- Perform A/B testing to evaluate model performance and impact.
- Document all data analysis and modeling processes.
- Adhere to data governance and security protocols.
- Maintain comprehensive records of data sources, methodologies, and results.
- Ensure compliance with data governance and security policies.
- Mentor and guide junior data scientists and analysts, fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional development.
- Attract, retain, and develop top analytics talent, ensuring the team maintains a diversity of
- skills, backgrounds, and experience.
- Lead and sign off on the recruitment of less experienced team members.
- Support new business RFP and pitching efforts as required, under direction from department
- leads.
- Maintain relevant marketing certifications and stay informed of marketing trends and tools.
- Exhibit a dynamic personality to effectively engage and influence senior stakeholders.

SKILLSETS REQUIRED:
- A bachelor’s/master’s degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Data Analytics, Computer Science, or a
- directly related field.
- 8+ years of industry experience in a data science/data analysis/statistical analyst role, preferably
- in the marketing domain.
- Strong proven leadership capabilities to manage and mentor the analytics team, to recruit and
- retain talent.
- Proven ability to oversee and manage a group of Data Scientists, utilising available resource to
- deliver on multiple high-priority projects and meet deadlines.
- Superior communication skills to convey complex data insights to non-technical and senior
- stakeholders. Be a confident presenter and clear, persuasive communicator (verbal and written).
- Proven experience solving analytical problems using quantitative approaches.
- Strategic thinking to develop and implement effective analytics strategies.
- Advanced expertise in machine learning, statistical modeling, big data technologies, and data
- analysis tools (Python, R).
- Advanced proficiency in SQL with extensive experience in relational, SQL, and NoSQL databases.
- Expert-level experience with BI tools such as Tableau and Power BI.
- Extensive experience working with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) and big
- data technologies.
- Proven experience in DevOps or MLOps practices.
- Deep familiarity with DS or ML frameworks and libraries (e.g., Spark, TensorFlow, PyTorch)
- Strong communication skills to effectively convey complex findings to non-technical
- stakeholders.
- Demonstrated success in leading marketing analytics methodologies like Multi-Touch
- Attribution (MTA), Audience Development, Clustering, Markov Chain analysis, etc.
- Strong technical understanding of a range of marketing concepts such as first-party and third-party cookie-based data collection, developing and activating audience segments from digital analytics and data management platforms.
- Collaborative mindset to work seamlessly with creative, strategic, and client-facing teams.
- Critical thinking to analyze data and derive meaningful marketing insights.
- Leadership and strategic planning abilities to guide the data science team and align projects with
- business objectives.
