Are you concerned about the rights and autonomy of persons living with mental illness? Are you a flexible, effective communicator who is able to empower vulnerable individuals impacted by the mental health system? If so, consider this on-call opportunity to provide rights advice to clients in the community who are subject to community treatment orders consistent with the provisions under the Mental Health Act.

Note: This position is irregular on-call servicing Hospitals in Kenora, Kitchener and Goderich area. You can work anywhere from zero to 36.25 hours per week. Hours are not guaranteed.

About the job

As an on-call community-based Rights Adviser, you will:

  • provide rights advice services to patients and/or substitute decision-makers as required under the Mental Health Act
  • provide information in a neutral, non-judgmental manner
  • assist clients in applying to the Consent and Capacity Board for a hearing
  • arrange for an interpreter where warranted
  • assist clients in applying for Legal Aid and with the Legal Aid processes
  • attend board hearings at the request of the Board
  • maintain current and up-to-date records on rights advice provided to clients and the outcome achieved
  • maintain strict client confidentiality
  • travel to meet with patients or substitute decision makers in the facilities or the community in your area

What you bring to the team


Communication, Evaluative and Interpersonal Skills

  • ability to work with and explain complex legislation to clients with varying educational and cultural backgrounds
  • ability to evaluate degrees of understanding and accurately interpret clients' instructions in an impartial manner
  • interpersonal skills to effectively and with empathy work with persons living with mental illness


Knowledge

  • understanding of mental illness and the ability to work with persons living with mental illness
  • knowledge of and/or ability to apply and interpret policies and procedures of psychiatric facilities as they relate to committal, findings of incapacity and Ontario's health system


Tact, Diplomacy and Judgment

  • ability to exercise sound judgment and diplomacy in stressful situations
  • ability to establish professional rapport with in-patients, hospital staff, stakeholders and the public


Organizational and Clerical Skills

  • advanced organizational skills to deal with a variety to tasks and inquiries simultaneously
  • clerical skills to complete a variety of forms and reports
  • ability to work independently with minimal supervision and to maintain strict confidentiality

The successful candidate must successfully complete the minister-approved Rights Advice Certification Training course as required under the Mental Health Act.
