Description

The Department of Psychology in the Faculty of Arts invites applications for a Research Assistant position. This Part-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension (Those interested in a similar full-time role should view our other job posting on the UCalgary careers website).

The position will report to Dr. Melanie Noel, Professor of Psychology and Full Member of the Alberta Children's Hospital Research Institute (Behavior and the Developing Brain Theme).

This position may require multi-site travel, with the majority of time spent at the Department of Psychology (Education Tower, University of Calgary Main Campus) and the minority of the time spent at the Alberta Children's Hospital. Workdays may vary in length and may include evening and weekend hours to facilitate data collection, management and oversight.

This position is responsible for supporting and managing research studies at the Alberta Children's Hospital, which may include patient recruitment, study execution, data collection, monitoring, entry, cleaning, scoring, and analysis, as well as manuscript preparation.

This position requires communicating effectively with children and teens as well as their parents involved with studies. Duties of this job will require liaising with clinicians and scientists within the pain teams and coordination with other staff members.

The Research Assistant ensures the research study is managed effectively and adheres with the project descriptions approved by ethics.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Preparing ethics submissions and communicating with the CHREB.
  • Ensuring that studies are carried out to a high quality and as per regulations stipulated by Health Canada, the Research Ethics Board, and other oversight and regulatory bodies.
  • Liaising between clinicians, researchers and team members to ensure that projects are managed effectively, on time, on budget, and are aligned with the overall objectives.
  • Providing stakeholders/clients with information and advice about our program. Assisting in the planning of current and future research projects.
  • Delivering engaging, informative, well-organized presentations.
  • Diligently maintaining and tracking budgets, spending, reimbursements, and invoicing according to signed funding agreements and UCalgary policies and procedures.
  • Facilitating team, stakeholder and client meetings effectively, informing them of progress and status of projects.
  • Proactively anticipating problems and developing preventative solutions; helping to establish quality performance standards. Resolving minor issues in the lab and research studies.
  • Escalating complex issues in a timely fashion.
  • Analyzing data using Excel, Access and appropriate statistical software (e.g., SPSS).
  • Assisting in preparation of supporting materials for grant proposals and funding requests.
  • Other administrative and data collection related to projects as needed.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Completion of a BA or BSc in Psychology or a related discipline (e.g. Health Sciences, Neuroscience).
  • 1-2 years experience in a healthcare-related research setting.
  • Experience working with children and teens in a professional capacity is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders at all levels of the organization, and deal with difficult/sensitive information tactfully.
  • Proficiency with computer software including Microsoft Office programs, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Experience with SPSS, clinical populations, data analysis, online data collection (REDCap), and IRISS is an asset.
  • Ability to multi-task and deal with multiple simultaneous priorities in an effective, efficient manner.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, accuracy, and strong attention to detail. Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment and independently (with minimal direction).
