Description

The Department of Medicine in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Assistant. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Principal Investigator.

The Research Assistant's primary purpose is to assist the Principal Investigator, Project Coordinators and the Research Team by providing study support. Tasks may include, but are not limited to, consenting and administering surveys to patients, responding to email inquiries, scheduling appointments, interviewing participants, booking and organizing meetings and screening events. It is the research assistant's responsibility to ensure that the daily study operations are completed in an efficient and effective manner. This position will work both independently and in a team environment. Success in the role will require some judgment and decision making, following procedures and guidelines set by the PI, and collaboration with the research team.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Prepare, edit, and proofread study materials
  • Book screening events for educational film screenings across Canada
  • Plan Calgary Advocacy Diabetes Committee (CDAC) meetings, and assist with any preparation
  • Plan and work at CDAC physical activity day events
  • Assist with data collection for a number of policy trials
  • Help with study tasks for pragmatic policy trials, as required by project coordinators
  • Order study supplies and equipment
  • Manage and answer email
  • Screen patients for study eligibility and administer surveys
  • Use and provide simple maintenance of fax, scanner and photocopier
  • Responsible for occasional data collection; both in person and over the phone
  • Assist with additional study tasks as required
  • Establish and maintain effective, productive relationships with staff, peers, immediate supervisor(s), senior management and with the campus community
  • Manage time effectively and ensure study coordinators are kept informed of activities, and progress of work

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Post-Secondary Certificate/Diploma/Degree
  • Minimum 2 years of related administrative experience/research experience
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are a necessity
  • Immediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint), Internet skills
  • Experience working with REDCap is an asset
  • Previous experience working with patients in a medical/clinical setting is an asset
  • Ability to operate and maintain various office equipment (eg. photocopier, fax machine)
  • Demonstrated strong communication, team and customer service skills, and an ability to exercise judgment within established guidelines
  • Must be open to learning and development and be willing to accept new challenges and assignments
  • A positive attitude and the ability to work independently and as part of a team are critical to success
  • Must have a valid driver's license and a private vehicle for transportation
  • Must demonstrate independent work ethic
