Department: Public Works

Location: LONDONDERRY

Type of Employment: Permanent

Union Status: NSGEU - NSPG

Closing Date: 25-Aug-25 (Applications are accepted until 11:59 PM Atlantic Time)

About Us

Building and maintaining our provincial infrastructure is no small job.

The Department of Public Works supports Nova Scotia’s 23,000 kilometers of roads and highways and 4,100 bridges. Our District Highway Operations Division plays a critical role in managing snow and ice control services, road maintenance and repair services throughout the province.

This is your next opportunity to directly support the maintenance of Highway Operations in the Northern District of the Province through providing technical advice and guidance, managing and motivating your crew, ensuring quality of work, and helping to achieve the work priorities of your assigned area.

About Our Opportunity

As the Operations Supervisor, you will oversee day to day highway maintenance, supervise staff and their performance, and coordinate the safe repair and rehabilitation of the road network.

Primary Accountabilities

While utilizing your expertise, you will oversee maintenance, repair, restoration, construction, and snow/ice operations, while ensuring proper service within your geographic area. You will schedule staff and equipment, provide technical advice to support management, and help set priorities and budgets. You will administer HR and Department policies, procedures, and collective agreements while ensuring compliance with Department plans, specifications, and regulations.

Qualifications and Experience

As the successful candidate, you hold a 2-year technical diploma in a related field as well as 6 years of related maintenance and construction experience (such as civil, road maintenance, commercial building construction, oil and gas, forestry, etc.). An equivalent combination of experience and a technical diploma will be considered.

As the ideal candidate, you have:

  • Experience in cost estimation, budget management, expenditure control and technical accomplishment.
  • The ability to understand and administer acts, regulations, policies and procedures, collective agreements and technical specifications.
  • Computer proficiency, including knowledge of spreadsheet software and creation, word processing, and email applications.
  • Strong supervisory skills, providing input to the performance management and training needs of your crew.
  • Ability to adhere and promote a safe, healthy and engaged work culture.
  • Professional communication skills, both oral and written, for collaborating with other government agencies, consultants, contractors and members of the public.
  • Well-developed planning and organizational skills, with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with competing priorities.
  • The ability to maintain a professional attitude and hold a high standard of customer service.

Knowledge of snow and ice removal operations along with the operations and maintenance of heavy equipment is desirable. Previous experience administering collective agreements would be considered assets. Familiarity with the Motor Vehicle Act and associated trucking relations, Environmental and Fisheries regulations, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Public Highways Act and Department policies and procedures are further assets to be considered.

We will assess all qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Equivalency

This is an excellent career opportunity for many, and we do consider an equivalent combination of training, education (technical diploma), and experience. Applicants relying on education and experience equivalencies must demonstrate such equivalencies in their application.

Benefits

Based on the employment status and union agreement, the Government of Nova Scotia offers its employees a wide range of benefits such as a Defined Benefit Pension Plan, Health, Dental, Life Insurance, General illness, Short and Long Term Disability, Vacation and Employee and Family Assistance Programs. For information on all our Benefit program offerings, click here: Benefits for government employees.

Working Conditions

You will travel regularly throughout your designated work area. Travel is often more than your scheduled hours and under extreme weather conditions. You may be on 24-hour call during the various seasons, including snow and ice control season, on a rotating basis and will be subject to shift work during those periods. Inspection of buildings, structures, and Right-of-Ways often requires working in precarious positions or environments.
