The Role

The Innovation Manager of Business Operations supports mid- to large-sized, multi-service accounts in single countries or dual regions within regulated environments. Reporting to the Innovation Senior Business Operations Manager or Head, they work closely with Innovation teams to drive operational excellence, deliver the business area’s commercial strategy, and embed a culture of innovation.

They help develop and implement global process standards, encourage tool adoption, and build financial and commercial capability across teams. They may also create and manage tools that provide high-quality data and insights to enable informed, data-driven decisions. Additionally, they support continuous improvement by promoting best practices and efficiency initiatives across Innovation.

Key Accountabilities

Strategic Leadership

  • Collaborate with the Innovation Head and Senior Manager of Business Operations to drive holistic performance and ensure budget targets are achieved.
  • Provide clear guidance on reporting schedules and expected outputs to deliver timely operational commentary.
  • Support teams in aligning with best practices to maintain a consistent, companywide approach.
  • Conduct detailed data analysis to generate actionable insights for delivery leaders.
  • Monitor financial markets and competitors to inform leadership decisions.
  • Track operational and financial performance using internal data and market benchmarks.
  • Participate in performance reviews to identify improvement opportunities.
  • Maintain project RAID and Lessons Learned logs to spot risks and opportunities early.
  • Contribute to risk management and performance tracking to ensure prompt corrective actions.
  • Provide data-driven input into pricing, scoping, and profitability recommendations.
  • Support the creation of contractual documents and advise on commercially sound agreements.
  • Collaborate with BI teams to produce business review reports and highlight potential issues.
  • Analyse performance trends, identify root causes, and oversee remedial actions.
  • Assist with contract renewals and manage contractual risks by monitoring and escalating as needed.

Enabling the Business

  • Help optimise internal processes, tools, and methodologies for efficient project delivery.

  • Monitor contract scope, governance, and compliance; address scope creep and manage risks per AMS frameworks.

  • Assist in reviewing and maintaining self-service tools and dashboards to ensure actionable, data-led insights for leaders.

  • Support and update training programmes to equip delivery teams with essential business operations knowledge.

  • Lead, coach, and monitor indirect teams to drive consistent performance; support change management and communication.

  • Identify tasks suitable for automation or reallocation to improve operational efficiency and consistency.

  • Share ideas for continuous improvement, including process, service, and financial enhancements with the Innovation Senior Manager.

Team Leadership

  • Oversee the Business Operations Principal
  • Cultivate vital relationship with appropriate contacts in other functions such as Finance, Accounting Operations and PSO on behalf of the Innovation Team.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives within Business Operations that enhance performance, and ability to support leadership and delivery.
  • Foster a high-performance culture, championing innovation, creativity and problem-solving.

Skills & Experience

People Leadership

  • Experience of working with matrixed remote teams, uniting virtual teams and different functions behind a shared vision to achieve results through others.
  • Demonstrated ability in, and passion for, people engagement and development.
  • Experience with training and coaching team members.

Commercial Advisory

  • Experience with leveraging financial and operational data and insights to guide informed commercial decisions.
  • Experience conducting market analysis and developing competitive strategy recommendations.

Stakeholder Management

  • Ability to build a position as a trusted advisor and engage and influence stakeholders towards a course of action.

Analytical and Strategic Thinking

  • Experience with storytelling with data – simplifying complex information and presenting data driven insights in a succinct and compelling manner
  • Demonstrated analytical mindset, with the capability to pre-empt challenges and opportunities through detailed data analysis and proactive insights.
  • Skilled in analysing data with use of metrics, benchmarks, ratios and forecasting techniques. Demonstrate proactive analytical and logical reasoning skills: able to discern patterns within information and cut through complexity to diagnose root cause of problem.
  • Advanced knowledge of Excel, Power BI or similar visualisation tools

Operational Excellence

  • Previous responsibility for driving operational excellence and continuous improvement initiatives through successful performance management.
  • Skills and behaviours to ensure that the business has access to the highest standards of data and insights for informed, data-driven commercial and operational decisions.
  • Evidence of innovative mindset, open to new ideas, takes calculated risks, encourages diversity of thought and creative thinking within the team. Agile and resilient in response to change and uncertainty. Able to support teams through significant change.

Risk and Issue Management

  • Knowledge of risk mitigation strategies, with experience in implementing management information and performance tracking systems to provide early warnings.
  • Involvement with proactive monitoring and identification of potential risks and opportunities.
  • Flexible and resilient in response to change or uncertainty, with the ability to lead a team and clients through change.
