The Opportunity
We are seeking a highly experienced and knowledgeable Major Project Safety Specialist to join our Calgary-based team. This role is critical in supporting the Owner’s project team while providing assurance oversight of the Prime Contractor’s safety performance on a major capital project.You will serve as a trusted safety advisor, ensuring that the Prime Contractor’s safety systems, practices and site-based culture align with Alberta’s Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) legislation and project-specific requirements. You will also play a key role in coaching, mentoring and providing technical safety support to the internal project team, helping to build safety leadership capacity and drive continuous improvement.
Note: This is a temporary position with an expected duration of approximately two years.
Role and Responsibilities
- Support the Owner’s project team with expert safety guidance, coaching and mentoring. Collaborate closely with the Senior Project Manager and Project Director to oversee and manage all safety aspects of the project.
- Project Safety Oversight and Compliance
- Provide oversight and assurance of the Prime Contractor’s safety management systems and field implementation.
- Apply in-depth knowledge of the Alberta OHS Act, Regulation, and Code to assess compliance and support decision-making in a dynamic work environment.
- Conduct audits, inspections, and reviews of safety documentation, procedures, and site activities.
- Participate in and lead incident investigations, including root cause analysis and development of corrective actions.
- Contribute to project risk assessments and ensure safety considerations are integrated into constructability reviews and planning processes.
- Utilize and evaluate safety management systems to monitor performance and identify improvement opportunities.
- Promote a culture of proactive safety, shared accountability, and continuous learning across the project.
- Project Safety Communication
- Act as the primary point of contact for the project team, contractors, and stakeholders on all safety-related matters.
- Facilitate safety meetings, reporting, and communications with internal and external stakeholders, ensuring clear and consistent alignment on safety expectations across all parties.
- Provide regular updates to project leadership on safety performance, emerging issues, and potential risks.
Qualification and Experience
- Diploma or degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Health, or a related field.
- CRSP with demonstrated field experience preferred.
- Minimum 10 years of experience supporting major capital projects in construction, infrastructure, or industrial sectors.
- Demonstrated expertise in interpreting and applying the Alberta OHS Act, Regulation, and Code in complex project environments.
- Strong knowledge of safety systems, incident investigation methodologies, root cause analysis, and risk management frameworks.
- Proven ability to coach, mentor, and support multidisciplinary teams in safety leadership and technical practices.
- Strong understanding of contractor oversight, assurance processes, and regulatory compliance.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively at all levels of the organization.
- Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, safety management systems, and digital reporting tools.
