About the Learning Disabilities Association of Saskatchewan
The Learning Disabilities Association of Saskatchewan is a not-for-profit organization formed in 1973 that serves those living with learning disabilities and ADHD in Saskatchewan. We do this through the operation of three offices, strategically located across the province in Saskatoon, Regina, and Prince Albert. The Learning Disabilities Association is part of The Learning Disabilities Association of Canada (LDAC), which has chapters in all the provinces and territories in Canada.
We offer a variety of services that supporting our mission, which is to identify and assess learning needs and ADHD, provide inclusive learning supports that build skills, knowledge and capacity, and advocate for people living with learning disabilities and ADHD. Job Summary:
The Canadian Adult Education Credential (CAEC) Instructor will be responsible for teaching basic skills to students with varying academic levels and challenges while integrating CAEC outcome skills and literacy and math skills. The instructor will help students meet necessary goals to qualify for their credential and/or employment.
Student Population LDAS Serves:
We offer the CAEC Preparation Program to adults in our community. Our program has up to three levels, Literacy, Pre-CAEC and CAEC. The students in this classroom often have a learning disability, possibly combined with other disabilities such as mental or physical health. Many of the students have had several obstacles in their lifetime and our role is to help them achieve an academic credential, or at minimum, have them ready and able to obtain sustainable employment.
Key Areas of Responsibility:
- Responsible for teaching Adult Basic Education courses using instructional methods geared toward the adult learner in a classroom setting.
- Plan lessons and curriculum based on the learning needs of culturally diverse and multi-skill level students which prepare students to pass the CAEC exams and/or enhance basic education and employability skills.
- Integrate competencies, goals and objectives into lesson plans.
- Responsible for instructing and evaluating the CAEC test areas (literature, writing, social studies, science and math).
- Implement a variety of instructional delivery methods that include group or individualized instruction as well as computer programs that help students achieve learning gains.
- Responsible for effective classroom management and invoking approved disciplinary procedures that enhance student learning.
- Administration and scoring of appropriate achievement tests to determine appropriate placement.
- Develop incentives and a positive climate and culture to enhance student learning and retention.
- Implement CAEC test accommodations and maintain records regarding student exams.
- Maintain daily attendance records.
- To be available to students regularly during prep time and classroom hours to discuss their progress, offer academic help and guidance and discuss other issues that influence their learning.
- To design and conduct evaluations or appraisals of students to keep students and administration informed of their progress.
- Participate in mandatory professional development.
- To communicate student needs and progress with the director as required.
- Work with team-mates and director to ensure program initiatives are being met.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the director.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Education
- Must hold a valid Professional & Teaching Certificate
