About the Werklund School of Agriculture Technology
The Werklund School of Agriculture Technology’s (WSAT) vision is to be a globally recognized school of knowledge and innovation, focused on technology, hands-on skills development, applied research, industry and international collaboration initiatives. Through design-based learning, students are encouraged to look at the challenges facing industry and come up with collective solutions through the use of technology. A variety of certificates, diplomas, applied degrees and post-diploma certificates are offered in agriculture, agriculture technology, and land and environment. The WSAT focuses on four key areas: land and environmental resources; agriculture and technological systems; agricultural communications; and social, physical and economic sustainability.
The Opportunity: Instruction Contract, Agricultural Business & Economics
An Instructor teaches in discipline areas in which they have specific training, competence and expertise. Instructors are responsible for the planning, preparation, and delivery of instruction and assessment of learners. This position includes administrative duties, engagement with teams in the Werklund School of Agriculture and Technology (WSAT), liaising with community, government and industry representatives and working with other College departments, as required.
Key Job Functions:
- Plan and prepare for instruction, including course content development
- Delivery of instruction considering various learning styles and needs
- Assess and report on student progress
- Work with other College departments to facilitate learner success (for example, accommodation services)
- Create a learning environment that encourages student engagement and participation
- Be accessible to students outside the classroom, providing ample periods of time for guiding and mentoring students in matters related to academic success
- Liaison with industry, government and community representatives, as required
- Monitor classroom supplies and tools inventory, as required

Perform various tasks to support student success:
- First point of contact for student concerns in the courses directly responsible for
- Monitor student performance and behaviour
- Submit reports, information and forms as required
- Maintain confidentiality and security of student information
- Learn and apply technology to enhance teaching and the educational experience when appropriate (for example, learning management system platforms, Google Suite, etc.)
- Collaborate with other instructors/instructional assistants within the related program(s) for coordination and aligning student learning experiences
- Perform other activities related to instructional assignment, coordinate activities within a program or programs; and participate in WSAT and broader College advancement.
Qualifications, Skills and Knowledge Required:
- A post-secondary degree relevant to the subject matter of the course(s)
- An MBA or PhD in business, finance, economics, leadership, or related areas is preferred
- Minimum 2 years work experience in a career occupation relevant to the subject matter of the course; or a combination of work experience and/or industry certification in a career occupation relevant to the subject matter of the course(s). Subject matter includes but is not limited to economics, risk management, business principles, asset valuation
- Knowledge and understanding of Canadian Agriculture is preferred
- Knowledge, skills, and/or training in instruction/teaching setting
- Experience with international students would be an asset
- Organizational skills with the ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks at once
- Dedicated to creating an inclusive and diverse learning environment that embraces individuals from all backgrounds and perspectives
- Demonstrate a strong commitment to promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion in their teaching, research, and interactions with students, colleagues, and the wider community, including having deep understanding of the value of diverse perspectives in enriching academic discourse and fostering a sense of belonging for all members of the campus community
- Ability to meet deadlines, work independently and collaboratively with a team, resolve problems and make decisions in accordance with College policies and procedures
- Knowledge and skills in current technology applications relevant to the program and subject matter content
- Excellent communication skills (both written and oral)
- Actively promote and reinforce practices that prioritize the well-being and security of all individuals at Olds College, show a proactive attitude towards safety measures, continuously striving to enhance safety protocols and procedures to ensure the highest standards of protection, collaborate with colleagues to instill a culture of shared responsibility and accountability when it comes to maintaining a safe and secure work setting
