JOB SUMMARY
Reporting to the Senior Human Resources Consultant (Disability Management), the Occupational Health Nurse (OHN) serves as the first point of contact for triaging non-occupational and occupational illness/injury claims. The Nurse communicates and collaborates with stakeholders
(managers, employees, Union representatives) to develop and sustain approaches and responses to illness/injury claims and to support wellness-focused options for meaningful return to work outcomes for employees. The position works collaboratively with Human Resources partners in
the prevention of illness and injury, co-ordination and implementation of pertinent and relevant Health and Safety programs, coaching and education in the effort of creating a welcoming and safe work environment.
DUTIES
- Provides expert guidance and coordination for case management of employee illness and injury claims, including accommodation plans and return to work processes, short-term disability, long-term disability, and WSIB (Workplace Safety and Insurance Board) claims
- Handles and reviews medical correspondence from employees
- Liaises with treating physicians and other medical care providers of employees for further information or clarification
- Critically analyzes case files to identify other health-related factors which may influence return to work or recovery time
- In review with the Senior HR Consultant (Disability Management) and the Senior Manager, Human Resources, refers and manages claims to occupational health physician (retained by TPL) where required
- Provides support to managers with respect to the attendance management program
- Provides training related to disability management and return to work processes.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor of Science (Nursing) required
- Current registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (RN required)
- Certified Occupational Health Nurse Designation (COHN) highly preferred
- Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in the Disability Management and Occupational Health field
- Minimum of two years’ related experience in a complex unionized environment
- Experience with workplace disability management programs and a working knowledge of external insurance providers
- Ability to handle sensitive issues and protect confidentiality of medical information.
- Strong ability to work collaboratively and respectfully with various internal and external stakeholders
- Demonstrated skill in working within a trauma-informed and human-centred approach to human resources and disability management
- Ability to exercise a high degree of judgment, sensitivity and tact in dealing with confidential, sensitive and complex issues
- Highly skilled in working in situations of conflict and ambiguity
- Strong organizational and workload management skills
SALARY:
$79,409.00 to $106,101.00 per annum (Wage Grade 5.5, 2025 Rates)
