The West Vancouver Planning, Development & Environmental Services Division is seeking a Replacement Temporary Full-Time Environmental Protection Officer. Reporting to the Manager, Environmental Protection, the successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Carrying out the administration of the District’s development permitting process for lands subject to coastal flood hazards, watercourses, and wildfire hazards;
  • Implementing and coordinating environmental reviews of development projects involving such matters as sea level rise, wildfire hazard risk, impacts to and protection of coastal and freshwater riparian habitats, and construction environmental mitigation measures;
  • Assisting in the development of District policies and standards for environmental projects and the review of related municipal bylaws, as well as the District’s tree permitting process;
  • Investigating environmental incidences;
  • Enforcing municipal bylaws related to watercourse protection and tree cutting;
  • Establishing and maintaining contact with and providing information to a variety of internal and external contacts and stakeholders;
  • Assisting in the review, evaluation, and understanding of background materials, reports, and GIS datasets pertaining to environmental matters;
  • Assisting with the development and review of storm water management and erosion and sediment control plans for construction projects;
  • Conducting on-site inspections; receiving, investigating, resolving inquiries and complaints from the general public and ensuring adherence to bylaws; and
  • Performing other related duties as required.

The preferred candidate will possess considerable knowledge regarding coastal and freshwater riparian habitats and environmental issues facing local government; the environmental methods, procedures, equipment, and instruments used; knowledge of the relevant Federal, Provincial, and Municipal legislation, regulations, and bylaws related to the work; the ability to communicate effectively with a variety of internal and external contacts.

The successful candidate: has a technology diploma or university degree in the area of biology, ecology, or environmental engineering plus 3-years field experience in environmental construction monitoring, fish and wildlife protection; is a member of or eligible for registration with the College of Applied Biologists (BC) or any other applied science or technology association dealing with environmental science; or has an equivalent combination of education and experience. A registered professional biologist designation is an asset.

The successful candidate will be required to supply a police information check and a copy of their credentials. A current BC Driver's License and use of a personal vehicle is required.

Starting Rate of Pay:


$45.32 per hour

This position has a pay structure with five steps which increase annually.
