The Opportunity:

NEC is seeking a highly motivated and empathetic Community Engagement & Outreach Specialist to join our dynamic team. This pivotal role is perfect for a passionate individual who thrives on building strong relationships, facilitating meaningful dialogue, and effectively communicating NEC's mission and impact. You will be instrumental in crafting compelling narratives, managing digital platforms, and developing key communication materials to showcase our projects and values. You will play a crucial role in fostering positive community relations and amplifying our message across various platforms, directly contributing to a sustainable future for North America's remote and northern communities.

Our Team:

We are a close-knit and agile team of approximately 10 dedicated professionals. Our employees live and work across Canada, in cities including Vancouver, Calgary, Whitehorse, Montreal, and Ottawa. While we are a remote-first company, fostering flexibility and efficiency, we also maintain physical office spaces in Vancouver and Calgary. This distributed yet connected structure allows us to effectively serve our diverse project regions while maintaining a collaborative and supportive work environment

Key Responsibilities:

As our Community Engagement & Outreach Specialist, your multifaceted role will involve:

Community Engagement & Facilitation:

● Lead and support in-person community engagement initiatives, fostering trust and strong relationships with First Nations, Indigenous communities, and local stakeholders.

● Facilitate workshops, meetings, and discussions to gather community input, address concerns, and ensure projects align with local needs and values.

● Act as a key liaison between NEC and community partners, ensuring transparent and consistent communication throughout project lifecycles.

● Support the development and implementation of community benefit agreements and local participation strategies.

Communications & Content Creation:

● Develop and implement comprehensive communication strategies to promote NEC's projects, values, and achievements.

● Manage and create engaging content for various digital platforms, including our company website, LinkedIn, and blog.

● Draft and distribute regular newsletters, press releases, and internal communications.

● Prepare compelling conference materials, presentations, and reports.

● Develop and maintain "Legacy Project" materials, showcasing the long-term positive impact of completed initiatives.

Grant Writing & Funding Support:

● Research and identify relevant grant funding opportunities from government agencies and other sources.

● Lead the preparation and submission of high-quality grant applications, articulating project benefits and community alignment.

● Collaborate with project teams to gather necessary information and data for successful grant proposals.

Projects You Might Work On:

This role will involve contributing to a diverse portfolio of impactful renewable energy projects across Northern Canada and Alaska, ranging from wind and solar farms to comprehensive community energy plans. You will be instrumental in ensuring our communication and engagement efforts are effective and culturally sensitive. Qualifications:

Experience:

● Approximately 3-5 years of progressive work experience in community engagement, communications, public relations, or a related field.

● Proven experience in facilitating group discussions and building consensus among diverse stakeholders.

● Demonstrated experience in content creation for various platforms (web, social media, newsletters).

● Experience with grant writing and successful funding applications is a strong asset.

● Experience within (renewable) energy, indigenous communities, or the northern development sectors is a highly valued, but not a requirement.

Education:

● University degree or college diploma in Communications, Design, Public Relations, Indigenous Studies, Environmental Studies, Community Development, or a related discipline.

Skills:

● Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal), with a proven ability to connect with diverse audiences.

● Strong cultural sensitivity and a self-reflective nature, crucial for effective engagement with Indigenous communities.

● Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.

● Creative and strategic thinker, adept at developing compelling narratives and visual content.

● Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a remote-first team environment.

● Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Workspace Suite.

● Proficiency of creative software programs such as Canva, the Adobe Suite, would be an asset, but are not required.

Travel:

● Willingness and ability to travel extensively to remote communities in Northern Canada and Alaska is an integral part of this role, estimated at approximately one week every two months on average.

Compensation & Work Environment:

● Employment Type: Full-time, Permanent

● Salary Range: CAD $70,000 - $90,000 annually, commensurate with experience and qualifications.

● Location: Hybrid work model based out of our Vancouver or Calgary offices. While we embrace remote-first principles, this role allows for in-person collaboration and engagement as needed.

● Start Date: Anticipated start date is September 2025.
