Position: Community Custodian and Facilities Caretaker
Location: St. Andrew's United Church, Chatham, Ontario
Part-time: 22 hours per week

Job Summary: We are seeking a dedicated Community Custodian and Facilities Caretaker to join our team. This role is crucial in maintaining our church’s welcoming atmosphere and operational functionality. The ideal candidate will bring a combination of custodial skills, interpersonal warmth, and a keen eye for detail to our diverse church community.
Key Responsibilities:
- Cleaning and Supplies Management: Ensure all areas of the church are clean and well-stocked, including sanctuaries, meeting rooms, offices, and restrooms. Regular tasks include vacuuming, dusting, restroom maintenance, and supply replenishment. Special attention is needed for post-event cleanups and preparation for high-traffic periods.
- Event and Activity Setup: Coordinate and execute the setup and takedown of furniture and equipment for church activities and external events. Work closely with church staff and community groups to understand specific requirements and ensure spaces are prepared in advance.
- Maintenance and Caretaking: Perform regular inspections and minor repairs to maintain the church’s facilities in good condition. Collaborate with the Property Committee to identify, prioritize, and address repair needs. Manage outdoor areas including snow removal, lawn mowing and minor landscaping tasks as needed.
- Security and Safety: Monitor building access during events and activities, ensuring a secure environment for all. Assist in managing and updating security systems, including alarm systems and security cameras. Conduct regular security checks and emergency preparedness drills.
- Community Interaction: Serve as a friendly and helpful point of contact for church staff, congregants, external renters, and community members. Embody the church’s values of inclusivity and respect in all interactions, especially with diverse groups utilizing our space.
Qualifications:
- Proven experience in custodial work, facilities maintenance, or a related field.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, to support the church’s dynamic schedule.
