Nova Construction Co. Ltd. (Nova) is a driving force in the Nova Scotia Road building industry. Well known for our expertise in “earth moving”, Nova produces aggregates, pavements (highways, roads, parking lots and driveways), builds bridges and marine infrastructure and operates open pit mines for coal and gypsum.
We are recruiting for an Asphalt Plant Operator based in Antigonish, NS to oversee the production of asphalt, ensuring quality and efficient operations of the asphalt plant. The role involves operating computerized controls, monitoring material quality, while ensuring compliance to regulations and client requirements, while coordinating with various teams for optimal production and safety.
Key Responsibilities:
· Plant Operation: Operating computerized controls to produce asphalt mixtures according to specifications.
· Material Monitoring: Monitoring material temperature and quality, ensuring adherence to standards.
· Quality Control: Collaborating with the quality control department to ensure a quality mix is produced.
· Truck Loading: Loading trucks with the correct mixture and quantities.
· Equipment Operation: Operating equipment such as front-end loaders to feed the asphalt plant.
· Maintenance: Performing routine maintenance and assisting with plant repairs.
· Safety Compliance: Adhering to all company safety policies and procedures and promoting a safe work environment.
· Communication: Communicating with various teams (e.g., paving superintendents, truck drivers, dispatchers) to coordinate production and ensure smooth operations.
· Record Keeping: Maintaining necessary paperwork and records.
· Training: Assisting with the training of new plant operators.
· Inventory Management: Assisting with ordering and managing supplies and materials.
· Troubleshooting: Identifying and resolving any mechanical or material inconsistencies.

Skills and Qualifications:
· Experience: The ideal candidate will have 2 or more years of Plant Operator experience with a valid Class 5 driver license and own a reliable vehicle.
· Technical Knowledge: An understanding of safety, aggregates and materials used in the production of asphalt, and the equipment used in the operation of an asphalt plant. This job requires high attention to detail, including the ability to perform basic math calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Comprehension of basis percentages is necessary to successfully calculate quantities of materials used to make asphalt.
· Management Skills: Must have the ability to oversee several projects at once, while maintaining tight deadlines.
· Communication Skills: Must have excellent verbal, oral, and written communication skills. This job requires the ability to communicate successfully with difficult employees under high stress situations. Must project a positive and cooperative attitude by maintaining courteous and professional conduct with Supervisors, co-workers, customers, and the public.
· Problem-Solving Skills: Must have the ability to identify and resolve complex problems that may arise during the manufacturing process.
· Leadership Skills: Must have the ability to lead and motivate project teams, foster collaboration, and build strong working relationships.
· Regulatory Knowledge: Must be familiarity with relevant safety regulations, NSDPW Standard Specification and road building practices.
· Education: A bachelor's degree in civil engineering, civil technology or related experience is required.
Working Conditions
- Ability to work the project schedule which may include overtime, weekends, and/or night shift.
- This job requires the ability to lift, pull, and push a minimum of 50 lbs., bend, stoop, kneel, reach, squat twist, and climb heavy equipment several times throughout the day, and balance at heights up to 6 feet from ground level. In addition, you must have the ability to be on your feet regularly and use hands, arms, and legs repeatedly on the job. This includes frequently walking on sloped ground and slippery and uneven surfaces, as well as working in confined areas.
