Job Summary:
Under the direct supervision of the Operations Supervisor, the incumbent will be responsible for maintenance and facility operational duties of the Teulon-Rockwood Arena. Tasks include preparing the ice surface, managing equipment, performing routine maintenance, and ensuring the facility is safe and clean for all users and in compliance with all regulations.
The successful candidate must be willing to work in the daytime, weekends, evenings and holidays, for a period of approximately six (6) months (September 1, 2025 to April 1, 2026). The amount of work is dependent on the volume of arena ice bookings. To provide some guidance, this position worked 853 hours during the 2024-2025 arena operating season. The chosen candidate will be subject to a criminal record check report and child abuse report.
Duties
Maintenance and Operation of Equipment
- Operates and maintains ice resurfacing equipment, ice edger; checks and logs ice depths, adjusts ice depths to maintain optimum thickness, monitors and logs service on the equipment, changes blades and changes propane bottles
- Responsible for performing general maintenance and service of equipment as required
- Responsible for maintaining logs for routine maintenance, repairs and inspections to ensure all tasks are documented and up to date. Reports any inconsistencies or issues to the Operations Supervisor.
- Responsible for ice making and day-to-day maintenance, including shaving, flooding, and edging for the Arena.
- Responsible for the safe and efficient operation of all equipment assigned to the Arena Attendant.
- Responsible for opening (one hour prior to hockey games; and 30 minutes prior to any other arena events; two hours prior to Interlake lightning games), securing and closing facilities for users.
- Responsible for setting up for facility events.
- Performs periodic checks of the refrigeration. Must accurately record, interpret and respond to gauge information.
- Enforce rules and regulations for operation of all facilities.
Safety and Compliance
- Perform daily building inspections including but not limited to air quality, refrigeration compressor plant checks, Olympia circle checks, fire extinguishers, AED, emergency lighting, and appliances.
- Monitor and enforce safety regulations and procedures within the arena, ensuring a safe environment for guests, staff, and participants.
Facility Maintenance
- Responsible for cleaning and custodial duties at all facilities, including washing floors, walls and washrooms
- Clean and stock public washrooms as required.
- Ensure that the arena is clean and maintained before, during, and after events and rentals, including cleaning seating areas, dressing rooms, restrooms, common areas.
- Maintain waste management, ensuring garbage and recycling are properly disposed of.
- Assist with ordering janitorial supplies and maintaining stock levels.
- Ensure that spectator areas, including seating, shielding (glass) and walkways are clear and clean.
Ice Quality Control
- Monitor and maintain the quality of the ice surface for optimal performance, including assessing temperature, humidity, and thickness.
- Perform regular ice resurfacing with Olympia to ensure smooth and even surfaces
- Collaborate with staff to ensure that ice conditions meet the requirements for different events, from hockey to figure skating and public skating sessions.
- Assist with start-up and shut-down procedures for ice refrigeration system.
General
- Deal courteously and effectively with the public, staff, suppliers, contractors, other departments and levels of government.
- Must be available to stay on site during the opening of all arena events and be available for other requirements within the arena as they arise
Specifications & Qualifications:
Minimum Required
- Must possess a valid drivers licence.
- Certification ORFA Basic Refrigeration; required or willing to obtain prior to start date (at candidate’s expense).
- Any additional certifications in Equipment Operations, Refrigeration, or Ice Technology; considered an asset
- Knowledge of/ability to operate an ice resurfacer (ie Olympia) safely and effectively.
- Available to work flexible hours, including weekends, evenings, and holidays.
- Must have the ability to work various shifts and stand-by shifts as required.
- Qualifying experience in arena and recreation facilities operations, maintenance and associated equipment use.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Possess excellent interpersonal skills to deal with the public and employees.
- Ability to work well under pressure, make sound decisions, and represent the Town in a professional and respectful manner.
- Working knowledge of all Health and Safety related training and implementation.
- While not a prerequisite in every case, a superior candidate will have skill or knowledge of plumbing, carpentry, mechanical, and electric matters.
- Strong mechanical aptitude to supervise or conduct equipment maintenance.
- Maintain all required licenses.
- Physically fit and mentally able to perform the required tasks.
- Satisfactory Criminal Record Check and child abuse check.
Preferred
- Ice Maintenance & Refrigerant Level 1.

Comprehension and Judgment
The incumbent will exercise a high degree of independent judgment in the provision of services by the Department within the approved policies and procedures of the Town.
Working Conditions and Physical Demands
- The position will work a variety of hours with overtime as necessary to fulfill the responsibilities of the position.
- This position requires the incumbent to be on call in case of an emergency, and may require working overtime and/or handle call-outs as required.
- Must have the ability to work various shifts and stand-by shifts as required.
- To respond to emergency situations after normal working hours, assessing the need for and mobilizing manpower and equipment to address the situation in an expedient and cost-effective manner.
- To ensure all safety procedures and respectful workplace standards are followed by all personnel throughout the Department.
