The District of West Vancouver Community Services Department has openings for casual Youth Leaders. Under the supervision of the Youth Services Program Coordinator, the Youth Leaders will assist at the West Vancouver Community Centre, the Gleneagles Community Centre, and the Youth Hub. The Youth Leaders are responsible for:

  • establishing and maintaining effective relationships with youth and acting as a positive role model;
  • preparing for, supervising and participating in a variety of social and recreational activities for preteens and youth, primarily in a drop-in setting;
  • monitoring youth volunteers including overseeing a youth volunteer-run concession program and handling low value cash transactions;
  • assisting in the supervision of special events such as pre-teen dances;
  • assisting in providing information to, and appropriate referrals for, youth;
  • opening and closing youth facilities and enforcing rules and regulations;
  • monitoring and reporting out on facility and equipment safety, security and maintenance requirements;
  • reading and preparing routine reports and providing drop-in statistics;
  • working collaboratively with all Youth Services staff and attending staff meetings and in-services;
  • performing other related work as required.

The preferred candidates will have completion of Grade 12 supplemented by post-secondary courses related to the work (i.e. Child & Youth Care, Recreation, etc.) plus related lived, professional and/or volunteer experience to demonstrate required skills, or an equivalent combination of training and afore-mentioned experience; an unrestricted Class 4 BC Driver’s License; and current Emergency First Aid (or better), CPR ‘C’ & AED certification.

The successful candidates will have: experience leading/supervising youth (11 - 18 years old) in various activities while providing a fun & safe environment; ability to demonstrate knowledge of the issues, needs and concerns of youth and their psychosocial development; ability to demonstrate ethics and professional boundaries in working with youth; ability to work independently and as part of a team in a culturally diverse community setting; excellent customer service, communication and interpersonal skills.

Hours of Work:


Hours and days of work may vary. Must be available for day and evening shifts beginning at 2:30 p.m. or 3 p.m. depending on location.

Must be available for two short shifts (2 hours) or one long shift (7 hours) a week at West Vancouver Community Centre, West Vancouver Youth Hub, and Gleneagles Community Centre.


Starting Rate of Pay:


$20.47 per hour plus 14% in lieu of benefits.

This position has a pay structure with two steps, which increases based on the number of hours worked.
