About the Job:
Reporting to the program manager, the Youth Specialist will be a part of a multi-disciplinary team responsible for providing counselling support and interactive programming to clients between the ages of 16-24 who are at risk of homelessness and live in a transitional housing program.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide informal counselling supports to promote positive health and independency in the community
- Act as role model to facilitate physical, emotional, and intellectual growth
- Act as a primary worker providing specialized case management and community outreach services to a case load
- Work in partnership with community agencies to coordinate support services
- Assist in the implementation and monitoring of residency plan and goals
- Assist in developing and maintaining individual skill building daily living and social skills necessary to obtain independency in the community
- Residential tasks
- Monitor safety and well-being of youth residing in program
- Develop and facilitate programming
- Utilize crisis de-escalation techniques to manage challenging behaviors
- Understand and be able to integrate a philosophy of strength based and client-centered care into daily responsibilities
- Demonstrate a strong commitment to quality care and service delivery based on SHIP’s Mission and Values
- Ensure appropriate documentation and records are kept and ensure that statistical information is maintained as per agency and privacy standards
- Adhere to agency Health & Safety Program and the Client Safety Framework
- Perform additional duties as required/delegated by Management
Qualifications:

Post-secondary education in Social Services, Child and Youth Care, or equivalent
- +2 years experience supporting Youth and/or the homeless population
- Previous experience working at a non-profit agency
- Knowledge of MS Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook)
- Valid Certification in First Aid & CPR
- Training in ASIST and CPI
Reporting Function:
The Youth Specialist will report directly to the Program Manager. They will work with both internal and external partners and will interact with all levels within the organization. They will have no supervisory responsibilities.
They will be a support system, resource, and an advocator for the team and Company.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
- Hours are Saturday 7pm-Sunday 7am and Sunday 7pm - Monday 7am
- This is a 3 months contract position
- Average amount of physical effort is required.
- Required to work statutory holidays
- Able to sit/stand for prolonged periods of time
- Able to answer and communicate telephone calls and general computer use
- Able to lift up to 20lbs (product, documents, etc.)
- Vehicle travel to sites for visits/walk-throughs and open doors as required.
