Job Description:
Position Purpose summary:
Under the directions of the Emergency Shelter Manager, Shelter Workers are responsible for intake / discharge communication, observations, and monitoring of clients. Shelter Workers are also responsible for other routine duties of the shelter as explained under the “Basic Functions / Responsibilities” section given in this job posting.
  • This is a weekend overnight shift position. Saturday and Sunday 12:00 am-8:30 am.
Accountabilities:
Responsibility
  • Perform client intake and discharge functions as necessary during shift.
  • Utilizes knowledge of issues, if applicable to the work setting, pertaining to women with children, domestic violence/abuse, mental health, addictions and homelessness to act as a client advocate, and provide emotional support.
  • Acts as a positive role model.
  • Maintains awareness of any problems (medical, behavioural or other) experienced by clients. Reports pertinent information to supervisor.
  • Ensures client supervision and safety and complies with relevant Belkin House Policies and Procedures.
  • Maintains appropriate records and statistics, ensures that all required documentation is correct and complete.
  • Ensures that the log book is kept up to date and that all incidents are recorded according to Policy and Procedure.
  • Provide in-reach services to client s (connecting with, taking an active interest in, supporting and encouraging clients), and liaising with outside agencies and shelters, and with Belkin House PDP Worker or Counsellor/Chaplains as may be necessary
  • Store and pack personal items left behind by residents.
  • Educates residents on Belkin House Policies and Procedures.
  • Attends and participates in meetings as required.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

  • Reports directly to the Shelter Manager

Manage relationships with clients, partner agencies and the Belkin Community as a whole.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • This position is required to work in a stressful environment often dealing with clients in crisis situations brought about by diverse problems including addictions and mental health issues. The ability to function independently and frequently under pressure, while managing multiple concurrent tasks including emergency situations, is an on-going expectation of this position.

education and experience Qualifications:
Education, Qualifications and Certifications:
  • Mature individual, who is committed to the mission of Belkin House
  • Completion of Grade 12 or the equivalent education, training and experience is typically required for this position.
  • Possesses valid First Aid/CPR certificate or obtains as condition of employment prior to end of probationary period. Other training requirements set by BC Housing should be included i.e. Food Safe
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal and teamwork skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of other social service agencies and their services.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and with a minimum of supervision.
  • Must be able to obtain Correction Service Canada clearance and clearance from The Salvation Army’s Child Abuse Registry as condition of employment prior to end of the probationary period.
Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements

At least Six months’ previous experience in issues including domestic violence/abuse, substance abuse, mental health, and homelessness issues, in a residential environment is an asset.

Compensation:
The target hiring range for this position is $25.10 to $25.35 with a maximum of $25.60.
Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
