The National Indigenous Navigator Position will work with Indigenous individuals and families with disabilities, across Canada, to assist in their obtainment of a variety of disability related benefits, nationally, provincially/territorially and regionally.
Benefits assisted with could include, but are not limited to: CPP-D, the Canadian Disability Benefit, the Disability Tax Credit, Registered Disability Savings Plan, Veterans benefits, Jordan’s Principle, provincial, federal and territorial disability benefits, and others.
DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES
- Under the supervisor of the NINS Coordinator, the National Indigenous Navigator will work directly, provide one-to-one support in accessing disability related supports.
Broad Functions of the National Indigenous Navigator
- The National Indigenous Navigator will work as a lead in assisting clients to access disability related benefits they are eligible for, across Canada, while serving as a resource to both the Indigenous and non-Indigenous sectors of Canada, through the development of comprehensive knowledge on available disability related supports.
- Assists eligible individuals and families with a disability to fulfill the necessary requirements of the relevant benefit(s) applying for. This includes direct one to one service, working with associated programs across Canada, necessary for the completion of applications and approvals, as well as collaborating with external service providers, thus ensuring that each individual/family is receiving the required level of assistance, services, and/or supports needed to be successful, as much as possible.
- Liaison / connect with medical professionals / Nurse Practitioners, government and community organizations to obtain information and for application support.
- Develops and maintains individual client files and case notes, in both hard copy and electronic forms, using clear and succinct language appropriate for a range of audiences, including actions taken, benefits applied for/received, timelines, barriers experienced, client related outcomes and other relevant information as necessary and/or as directed;
- Works in partnership and collaborates with federal, provincial and territorial disability government programs to obtain information that may be relevant for the various application process;
- As a Lead, the Navigator will be stay updated on all changes to the various applications, their processes and eligibility criteria;
- Makes available benefit related information, eligibility requirements and other relevant information, both in printed and electronic forms, accessible to Indigenous individuals, families, organizations, and communities across Canada;
- Provides IDC supervisor and senior management with insight on benefit(s) uptake and any external policies issues experienced by eligible individuals and families with a disability, both real and perceived, for information sharing and the potential development of strategies, as able, to address barriers;
- Prepare detailed and accurate reports as required/directed;
- Obtains and reviews all pertinent client disability and medical information, as necessary;
- Provide ongoing and active support for the client as needed during all benefit application processes;
- Initiate effective, accurate and concise communication of all actions, to the client and other parties as appropriate;
- Maintain strict client and organizational confidentiality at all times;
- Assist in overall office operations / duties, as required
Team Work
- Attends training, development initiatives and IDC team meetings as scheduled.
Actively supports continuous improvement by identifying problem areas in regard to efficiency and effectiveness of Navigation service delivery to our clients;
- Works with various external specialists, clinicians, disability and health professionals, and IDC/BCANDS team members as required;
- Works well with others, and demonstrates the highest level of maturity when dealing with interpersonal or organizational issues.
Reporting
- Compiles required reporting documents as requested by the Society, and funding partners.
- Other reporting duties as assigned.
Position Requirements
- Experience in social services / disability benefits. An acceptable combination of education and experience may be considered;
- Possess understanding of current and historical events affecting Indigenous Peoples in Canada with the ability to perform duties in a culturally informed and safe manner;
- Excellent interpersonal skills;
- Must be mature with excellent work ethic;
- Good oral and written abilities;
- Good computer skills (word, excel, email, etc.);
- French an asset
