Indigenous Human Rights Program Coordinator
Job Posting – 1 Full Time Term Vacancy


SUMMARY:
The Indigenous Human Rights Program Coordinator’s primary responsibility is to assist urban Indigenous people to feel empowered to make decisions regarding their human rights. The Indigenous Human Rights Program (IHRP) Coordinator will be responsible for overseeing the free human rights legal clinic and public legal education workshops, in partnership with Pro Bono Students Canada. This position will collaborate with members of an interdisciplinary team to plan, implement, and coordinate culturally relevant services and support, to facilitate healing and healing pathways, and to provide a client-centered approach to case management and system navigation.


QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Preferred degree in Indigenous Human Rights, Canadian Human Rights, Law, Social Justice, or Social Services, Justice, Indigenous Studies, or in a relevant human service field and/or minimum 5 years work experience in a justice services environment.
  • Strong knowledge and awareness of Indigenous culture and history, with particular emphasis on Indigenous human rights, racism and discrimination, the impacts of trauma, and engagement and community outreach; knowledge of an Indigenous language(s) will be considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of the judicial system, Criminal Code, and other related federal and provincial statutes, and related court decisions regarding Indigenous persons. Knowledge of sentencing principles, alternative measures and restorative justice principles. Experience in Restorative Justice and Conflict Resolution is an asset.
  • Strong understanding of the Canadian laws and justice system, including familiarity of Legislation, Commissions, Inquiries and cases relevant to Indigenous human rights, justice issues and programs.
  • Experience in community service planning, delivery, administration, and volunteer coordination.
  • Self-motivated individual able to work with minimal supervision in a team-oriented setting.
  • Excellent case and file management skills, stress management and time management skills; ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to engage people; effective verbal and listening communication skills.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Group facilitation, team building and decision-making skills; ability to take initiative.
  • Effective crisis intervention skills; ability to provide individual support and advocacy.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office including database applications.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and/or weekends.
  • A clear criminal reference check (CPIC) and Vulnerable Sector Clearance is a condition of employment.
  • Must have a valid Ontario Driver’s License and reliable transportation.
