What this role is all about:

The Manager of Systems Administration & DevOps is responsible for overseeing the organization’s systems infrastructure, cloud environments, and DevOps practices to ensure seamless, efficient, and scalable IT operations. This role manages the Systems Administration and DevOps teams, directing their efforts to maintain and improve server infrastructure, automate workflows, and implement CI/CD pipelines that support rapid, secure, and reliable software deployments. The Manager collaborates closely with development, infrastructure, and security teams to create a stable, automated environment that supports agile development and operational efficiency.

In addition to managing day-to-day system and cloud operations, this role plays a key part in defining DevOps and Infrastructure strategies, ensuring they align with organizational goals, improve system resilience, and optimize performance. The Manager is essential for driving a culture of automation, innovation, and continuous improvement within the IT organization.

This role is open to hybrid working arrangements within B.C. While we welcome all applications, we anticipate filling this role with a candidate located in British Columbia.

What you’ll do:

Team Leadership and Development:

  • Lead, mentor, and manage a team of systems administrators and DevOps professionals.
  • Provide guidance on best practices, encourage skills development, and build a collaborative, proactive team culture.
  • Set team goals and ensure alignment with the broader IT and organizational strategy.

Systems Administration:

  • Ensure systems are regularly patched, updated, and optimized for performance, reliability, and security.
  • Manage virtualization environments, storage solutions, and backups, ensuring data integrity and availability.

DevOps and Automation:

  • Drive adoption of DevOps practices, including CI/CD pipelines, configuration management, and infrastructure as code using tools like Jenkins, Terraform, and Ansible.
  • Develop and implement automation strategies to streamline deployments, monitoring, and operational processes.
  • Collaborate with development teams to improve the deployment and release processes, enabling faster delivery of features and fixes.

CI/CD Pipeline and Deployment Management:

  • Design, implement, and maintain CI/CD pipelines to support efficient and secure software delivery.
  • Ensure deployments are repeatable, reliable, and adhere to industry best practices for security and scalability.
  • Work closely with development and quality assurance teams to optimize build, test, and release workflows.

System Monitoring and Incident Management:

  • Implement and manage monitoring tools to maintain real-time visibility into systems and application performance.
  • Develop incident response procedures and manage incident resolution for critical systems, ensuring minimal disruption to business operations.
  • Conduct root cause analysis after incidents, implementing preventive measures to improve system stability.

Security and Compliance:

  • Collaborate with the security team to ensure that systems and DevOps practices adhere to security and compliance standards.
  • Implement role-based access controls, data encryption, and other security measures within systems and cloud environments.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant regulatory standards and assist in security audits when required.

Capacity Planning and Performance Tuning:

  • Assess infrastructure capacity and anticipate future needs, working proactively to ensure that systems can handle expected growth.
  • Optimize system performance through tuning, resource allocation, and load balancing to support peak usage periods.
  • Regularly review infrastructure performance metrics and make recommendations for improvements or upgrades.

Documentation and Knowledge Management:

  • Ensure accurate and up-to-date documentation of infrastructure configurations, deployment processes, and standard operating procedures.
  • Maintain a knowledge base of system architecture, troubleshooting steps, and DevOps practices to support team collaboration and onboarding.
  • Encourage continuous learning within the team, keeping them informed of new tools, technologies, and methodologies.

Cross-Functional Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Collaborate with development, infrastructure, security, and IT operations teams to ensure alignment on system and deployment needs.
  • Work closely with product and engineering teams to support new software releases and maintain infrastructure compatibility.
  • Regularly report on system health, DevOps metrics, and project updates to IT leadership and other stakeholders.

A little about your qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field or related experience.
  • Relevant certificates (Microsoft Certified, Certified Kubernetes Administrator is a plus).
  • 5+ years of experience in systems administration and/or DevOps, with at least 2+ years in a leadership role.
  • Proven experience managing hybrid infrastructure environments, including on-premises.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across departments and present complex information to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strategic vision: Able to translate business needs into infrastructure strategy and support the organization's long-term goals.
  • Adaptability: Comfortable working in a dynamic environment, balancing strategic initiatives with day-to-day operational demands.
  • Proactive and detail-oriented: A hands-on leader who ensures high standards of operational excellence, documentation, and security.
  • Proven troubleshooting skills with the ability to diagnose complex infrastructure issues and develop innovative solutions.
  • Strong analytical abilities for capacity planning, performance optimization, and system tuning.
  • Excellent leadership and team-building skills, with a track record of mentoring and developing technical staff.
  • Strong knowledge of cloud platforms, virtualization, and storage systems.
  • Proficient in DevOps tools and practices, including CI/CD, IaC, and containerization.
  • Familiarity with monitoring and alerting tools, as well as scripting languages

What you’ll gain:
