Executive Director — NLAYE NDASADAYE CHILD CARE SOCIETY
Location: Whitehorse, YT
Position type: Full-time (40 hours/week, Monday–Friday)
Reports to: Board of Directors
Compensation: $77,812.80–$98,612.80 (commensurate with education & experience)
NLAYE NDASADAYE CHILD CARE SOCIETY is seeking an experienced, mission-driven Executive Director to provide strategic leadership and day-to-day management of our licensed early learning programs. The Executive Director will implement Board policies, ensure regulatory compliance, lead and manage our team, steward finances, and foster strong relationships with families and community partners.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead daily operations and oversee delivery of age-appropriate programs that support children’s cognitive, physical, social, and emotional development.
- Build a collaborative, high-performing culture; coach staff and enable effective teamwork.
- Establish effective follow-up and continuous-improvement practices.
- Support the Board in shaping the organization’s vision and strategic plan.
- Attend Board meetings, prepare monthly operational reports, and keep the Board informed on legislative/licensing updates.
- Implement Board-adopted policies and elevate policy recommendations as needed.
- Communicate and implement policies and procedures; monitor effectiveness and ensure timely updates to manuals and handbooks.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable requirements, including the Child Care Act,
- Environmental Health, Employment Standards Act, Occupational Health & Safety Act, Fire Department, and other mandated legislation.
- Determine staffing needs; recruit, hire, onboard, supervise, and evaluate employees in accordance with approved HR policies.
- Able to professionally and fairly handle conflict resolution and staff development.
- Ensure all hiring protocols are followed (e.g., Vulnerable Sector Checks, orientation, and required training).
- Lead regular staff meetings and provide ongoing professional development opportunities.
- Safeguard financial health through sound budgeting, cash-flow oversight, and expense control.
- Manage A/R and A/P and maintain accurate financial records with the bookkeeper; Complete required documentation for funders.
- Develop the annual operating budget with the Treasurer/Board; implement cost-reduction or funding strategies when required.
- Uphold fraud-awareness and financial control practices.
- Create an inclusive, welcoming environment for families; communicate proactively and respond to concerns per policy.
- Provide leadership in addressing child behaviour/development issues and connecting families to resources.
- Represent the organization with licensing bodies and community partners to further advocacy and program objectives.
- Maintain a safe, clean center; coordinate facility upkeep (e.g., carpet cleaning, floor waxing).
- Provide program coverage when short-staffed.
- Stay current with developments in the early learning field and participate in professional development.
Qualifications & Key Competencies
- Early Childhood Education Diploma or Degree from a recognized post-secondary
- institution
- Level 3 Child Care Certification (as defined under Yukon Child Care Regulations)
- Current First Aid and CPR Certification for child care settings
- Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search
- TB test and up-to-date immunization records
- Medical clearance to work in a child care environment
- Minimum 2 years of leadership in early childhood education
- Proven ability to plan, implement, and assess high-quality early learning programs using emergent curriculum.
- Knowledge of Yukon early childhood education legislation and frameworks
- Knowledge of non-profit governance practices.
- Strong interpersonal, communication (written and verbal), and team-building skills.
- Sound judgement, discretion with confidential information, and the ability to stay composed in high-stress situations
- Strategic thinking with strong priority-setting and goal execution.
- Solid budgeting, analytical, and financial management skills.
- Commitment to collaborative leadership, shared respect, and a positive workplace culture.
