Purpose of the Role
The Child Care Trainee position is a developmental opportunity for individuals seeking to build skills in culturally informed caregiving and child welfare support. Under close supervision, the trainee assists with caregiving routines, supervised visits, and administrative tasks to support the wellbeing of children involved with Payukotayno’s Child Welfare programs.

This role emphasizes learning through experience, community mentorship, and guided practice, and is ideal for individuals interested in pursuing careers in child and family services within their home Nations or Treaty 9 communities.

Core Responsibilities

1. Guided Child Care Support

  • Assist with supervision and caregiving duties for children and youth in agency care or kin placements
  • Observe and learn from Child Care Case Aides, Caseworkers, and other caregivers
  • Participate in supervised visits, recreation activities, and traditional practices when appropriate

2. Learning Indigenous Approaches to Care

  • Learn about traditional parenting, child development, and Indigenous values in caregiving
  • Receive mentorship from Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and agency staff
  • Participate in cultural activities and teachings related to caregiving and wellness

3. Administrative and Practical Support

  • Help with preparing child care spaces, supplies, and documentation
  • Assist in transporting children under supervision for visits or appointments
  • Maintain respectful documentation and follow confidentiality protocols under guidance

4. Professional and Personal Growth

  • Attend training sessions, orientations, and professional development opportunities
  • Participate in team meetings and reflective debriefings to support learning
  • Demonstrate commitment to working respectfully with children, families, and staff

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Secondary school diploma or working toward diploma/equivalency
  • Interest in working with children, families, and Indigenous communities
  • Willingness to learn about Indigenous law, child wellbeing, and community protocols
  • Ability to take direction, ask for help, and receive feedback in a respectful and open manner
  • Good interpersonal skills and cultural humility

Conditions of Employment

  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check including Vulnerable Sector Screening
  • Valid Ontario Class G Driver’s License or ability to work toward obtaining one
  • Reliable attendance and willingness to travel within the region
  • Participation in all training and mentorship activities as part of development plan
