The Town of Qualicum Beach is seeking applications for the position of Labourer Trainee in the Parks Department on a temporary full-time basis for a period of up to eight (8) months.

Typical duties will include:

  • Turf maintenance and irrigation work;
  • Planting and maintaining perennials and annuals;
  • Pruning ornamental and fruit-bearing trees and shrubs;
  • Assisting in the construction, renovation, and maintenance of various landscaped and horticultural areas;
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Required qualifications include:

  • Completion of Grade 12;
  • A valid Class 5 Driver’s License with a safe driving record;
  • Experience in all aspects of general parks labour, including the specific areas noted above;
  • Experience operating landscaping equipment such as hedge trimmers, string line trimmers, lawn mowers, front end loaders, tractors, skid steer, utility side-by-side vehicles, commercial woodchippers, and chain saws;
  • Physical capability to safely complete continuous manual labour (e.g. bending, shoveling, lifting, pushing/pulling, etc.) in all weather conditions;
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, particularly when dealing with the public;
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a part of a team as well as independently;
  • Knowledge of safety rules and regulations with a proven track record of working safely;
  • Previous experience working in a municipal government setting will be considered an asset.


The terms and conditions of employment are covered by the CUPE Local 401 Collective Agreement. The rate of pay is $26.65/hr. Successful applicants will be expected to work 40 hours/week and shifts may include weekends.
