POSITION TITLE: Youth Advisor
REPORTS TO: Program Director, Pathways to Education
Position Overview
Reporting to the Program Director, the Youth Advisor engages youth in the Teen Resource Center’s (TRC) Pathways to Education program through one on one meetings and group programming. The Youth Advisor is responsible for overseeing student progress for their caseload, dispersing financial supports and facilitating programming. Youth Advisors work closely with parents and schools to ensure students are meeting the expectations of the program and accessing the services they need. The Youth Advisor position includes a significant amount of administration to ensure proper documentation of meetings and programing with youth.
Qualifications
- Relevant combination of experience and post-secondary education in the fields of Youth Work, Education, Community Development or Social Sciences
- Experience working with diverse populations of youth one-on-one and in groups
- Detail oriented with strong organizational, written and presentation skills
- Exceptional verbal communication and interpersonal skills and able to thoughtfully and effectively communicate with staff, volunteers and the public in a manner that is aligned with organization policies
- Personable, motivational and able to develop a positive rapport with students, families and stakeholders building their connection to the program and organization
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and comfortable working with databases
- Ability to set priorities, manage workloads and work independently with minimal supervision and work in a team setting
- Knowledge of community and social service resources that support youth and families in Saint John is an asset
Youth Advisor Core Responsibilities:
- Work with youth to understand their educational strengths, and challenges they face, in order to develop a plan with youth that builds on strengths and address challenges
- Maintain positive and supportive relationships with stakeholders, including schools, parents and program partners to ensure the students fully participate in the program
- Assist with the registration and orientation of all Pathways families
- Support student evolution by monitoring and writing detailed and accurate reports/case notes on attendance, grades, progress and one-on-one meetings
- Refer individual students and their parents/guardians to other community resources when appropriate
- Support and supervise volunteers during programing
- Help organize and develop any needed resources for programs
- Establish and maintain supportive relationships with student/family caseload for the duration of their participation in program
- Oversee student academic success
- Support the identification, development and application of the youths’ assets and skills
- Build youth capacity to advocate for themselves and their peers
- Support families to address socio-emotional and mental wellbeing of students and/or access resources that will support the socio-emotional and mental wellbeing of students
- Deliver financial supports that contribute to youth success and wellbeing
Youth Advisor Shared Responsibilities:
- Facilitate program tutoring sessions that include tutoring and developing student academic capacity.
- Deliver and/or coordinate specialty and career based workshops for students
- Work with students to develop mentoring activities relevant to their interests and abilities
- Design (with youth participation) and facilitate project-based leadership opportunities.
- Plan and facilitate student programs, small group workshops and mini-lessons specific to areas in which students and volunteers require additional support
Job Types: Full-time, Permanent
Pay: $21.00-$23.00 per hour
