Position Summary

Seabird Island is committed to advancing educational equity and supporting all learners through culturally responsive practices. We are dedicated to creating a culturally safe and inclusive environment that respects and values Indigenous knowledge, traditions, and ways of being. We are seeking a Student Success Coordinator to join our team, working collaboratively to enhance educational services, student engagement, and community relationships.


Under the direction of the School Principal, the Student Success Coordinator provides culturally informed support, coordination, and advocacy for students. This role involves promoting enrolment, attendance, student achievement, and program completion through collaboration with school staff, parents, and external stakeholders. The Student Success Coordinator will also engage in community relations activities, working with school districts, families, and Indigenous organizations to foster strong connections, raise awareness of school programs, and support student access to learning opportunities and success in education.


This is Full-Time Term Contract with a Start date of August 25, 2025 and end date of June 30, 2026, with the possibility of extension for the following school year.


What You'll Do

  • Conduct home visits for students in K4–Grade 12 to discuss student progress, attendance, and other concerns as directed by school administration.
  • Build and maintain strong, positive relationships with students, families, school staff, and external partners, including representatives from School District 78 and surrounding communities.
  • Promote Seabird Island Community School through outreach to other communities.
  • Support student success by encouraging school attendance, homework completion, and graduation readiness.
  • Participate as an active member of the school’s Student Support Team, contributing to collaborative planning and student interventions.
  • Provide classroom support and supervision as requested by school administration.
  • Deliver career counseling services to students in Grades 8–12, including the development of educational and career planning resources.
  • Prepare monthly reports on student attendance and career counseling activities for review by the principal.
  • Maintain accurate records in accordance with administrative requirements.
  • Coordinate and participate in student support circles in collaboration with the school counselor.
  • Work with parents, health care professionals, and support staff to address student needs under the guidance of administration.
  • Assist with both indoor and outdoor student supervision, including during school functions and special events such as evening programs, back-to-school events, and the Seabird Island Festival.
  • Commit to ongoing professional development in career counseling and student support services.

  • Additional responsibilities as needed to support the community and uphold our shared values.

Working / Special Conditions

  • Initial and ongoing employment is subject to submission of a clear Criminal Record Review Program Check to ensure the safety and trust of the communities we serve. This check will be conducted every five years.
  • Initial and ongoing commitment to the values and guidelines of Sq'éwqel (Seabird Island Band), including our policies, procedures, standards of practice, and laws, is essential. This commitment supports our collective work, the community, and the responsibilities of this role.
  • Must possess a valid class 5 driver's license and have access to safe and reliable transportation, insured for community-based use, to effectively engage and support projects, work, and initiatives.
  • Flexibility in working hours may be required, including evenings and weekends, to accommodate the needs and schedules of events, meetings, and engagements. Employees will be given as much notice as possible to any changes in schedule.

What You Bring

Qualifications:

  • A certificate or undergraduate degree in a field such as First Nations Studies, Education, Social Work, Community Development, or related field. We also recognize and value cultural knowledge and experience gained through other forms of education and training, including teachings from Elders and Knowledge Keepers.
  • At least 3 years of related experience working within First Nations communities, with a strong understanding of Indigenous traditions, culture, and contemporary community concerns.
  • Proven ability to build trusting relationships with First Nations students, families, and communities.
  • Strong knowledge of elementary, secondary, and post-secondary education systems in British Columbia.
  • Skilled in having critical and culturally sensitive conversations with students and families.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in cross-cultural environments and maintain high ethical and professional standards.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, time management, and communication (written and verbal) skills.
  • Highly flexible and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage multiple priorities under pressure.

Preferred:

  • Indigenous candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.

  • Knowledge and understanding of Seabird Island’s culture, traditions, teachings, community dynamics.
  • Ability to respond quickly and professionally to community or colleague needs and inquiries.

Cultural Competency:

  • Deep understanding of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and contemporary issues.
  • Experience working within Indigenous communities and applying culturally safe practices.
  • Understanding of intergenerational trauma and its impacts on Indigenous peoples and communities.
