Position Summary:
Reporting to Access Services Advisor – Team Leader, provides daily, on-campus assistance to a student with a major functional disability to support their academic engagement and personal and physical well-being throughout their studies. The role includes a combination of physical assistance, personal care, and assistance with coordination with university services to ensure accessibility needs are met.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Ensure the safety, comfort, and overall well-being of the student during the predetermined term schedule
  • Provide consistent, on-campus support tailored to the student’s disability-related needs.
Physical and Personal Support
  • Assist the student in navigating campus and moving between locations.
  • Support for the student may include :
    • Setting up and taking down materials and technology.
    • Transporting course-related equipment and materials.
    • Retrieving items from backpack or other belongings.
    • Hygiene, personal care, and feeding assistance (may include tube-based feeding).
  • Accompany the student to and ensure safe boarding on adapted transport at the end of each day or as required.
Academic Support
  • Accompany the student to classes and academic meetings.
  • Take comprehensive, high-quality notes during classes.
  • Assist with the use of computers, academic software, and other technologies.
  • Support academic-related tasks such as presentation preparation and group project participation.
Coordination and Emergency Planning
  • Liaise with internal and external colleagues to ensure necessary supports and accommodations are in place.
  • In collaboration with the student and Student Accessibility and Achievement, create and update a personalized emergency plan.
Technical and Administrative Support
  • Use a variety of software applications to support the student and maintain relevant records.
  • Participate in the development and improvement of systems that enhance support for students with disabilities.

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities
  • Diploma of Vocational Studies (DEP) in an appropriate specialty (e.g., Assistance in Health Care Establishments; Assistance to Patients or Residents in a Health Care Establishment; Institutional and Home Care Assistance; Patient Attendant (préposé(e)s aux bénéficiaires); Diploma of Vocational Studies in Health; Assistance and Nursing Care (Diplôme d'études professionnelles en santé, assistance et soins infirmiers (SASI)) + 1 year of related experience; a Secondary School Diploma or a diploma or an attestation of studies recognized as equivalent by the competent authority and have one (1) year of pertinent experience in those areas requiring self-discipline, general concepts in psychology and human relations skills.
  • Other requirements
  • Hold a certificate dated no more than three (3) years attesting to the successful completion of:
    • 1. a standard first aid course of a minimum eight (8)-hour duration;
    • 2. a refresher course of a minimum six (6)-hour duration updating the skills acquired in the course mentioned in paragraph
  • At least one (1) year of pertinent experience related to the specific position:
    • Experience in manipulating and transferring individuals to and from wheelchairs;
    • Experience in personal care;
    • Experience in working with individuals with various disabilities;
  • Demonstrate strong communication and listening skills.
  • Maintain excellent physical condition to meet the demands of the role.
  • Exhibit responsibility, reliability, and strong organizational skills.
  • Is comfortable performing repetitive tasks according to established procedures.
  • Capable of performing physical work and handling medical instruments or equipment.
  • Show initiative and ability to work autonomously.
  • Experience working with individuals with physical disabilities, ideally in a support or care setting (e.g., schools, hospitals, home care, community services).
  • Experience providing personal care, mobility assistance, and/or academic support considered a strong asset.
  • Familiarity with adaptive technologies or support in educational settings is an advantage.
  • Knowledge of French and English: McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level # 4 (fluent) on a scale of 0-4.
Working Conditions
Physical Demands
  • The role may require lifting, transferring, and repositioning of the student, necessitating physical strength, mobility, and endurance.
Emotional Demands
  • Supporting a student with a major functional disability may be emotionally demanding and requires a high level of patience, empathy, and resilience.
  • The role may involve managing complex or challenging behaviours with professionalism and care.
Work Environment
  • The work takes place primarily indoors in various campus settings, including classrooms, hallways, laboratories and accessible washroom facilities.
  • Occasional work in outdoor areas may be required (e.g., moving between buildings or during transport).
  • Involves sustained close physical proximity to the student throughout the day.
  • May include assisting during transportation to and from campus or between campus locations.
Hours/Schedule
  • Monday to Friday, 3-5 hours per week with a schedule determined by the schedule of the student, with up to 20 additional hours per week during group projects, library research and library study, etc. based on the needs and the schedule of these activities.Typically scheduled between 8:00 am and 6:00 pm, based on the schedule of the student. Hours outside of this may be required based on specific academic scheduling demands.
Salary: MUNACA Level G. $31.19 per hour
End date: April 30, 2026
