Who are we?
Multicultural Health Brokers Co-op Ltd.
The Multicultural Health Brokers Cooperative is a registered Non-profit Cooperative with a mandate to provide culturally and linguistically appropriate support to immigrant and refugee families from around the world. We are a grassroots, hands-on organization that believes in fostering genuine, empowering, and often long-term relationships with our clients, communities, and each other to increase the health of individuals, families, and communities.
We are seeking a Cultural Brokers from the Spanish Community who are familiar with the communities (having understanding of the Culture and languages of the communities)
The role of the Broker is to work collaboratively with Child Intervention to build parenting capacity, health, and well- being with families in the Spanish Community. These families and children often come to us in crisis, facing complex life circumstances without key supports. The support that a Broker provides includes holistic family support, building one-on-one relationship with clients, walking side by side with them as they navigate through individual challenges - whether it’s health, housing, economic, or relationship challenges as well as bringing people together in groups for mutual support and participatory education. There are also elements of advocacy for clients and community in general.
The Provincial Multicultural Supports Project
Through the Provincial Multicultural Supports Project/Provincial Family Resource Network (PFRN), MCHB has the opportunity to pilot half-time brokering hours in the Spanish community. The roles and responsibilities of these brokers will be different from brokering work in the Edmonton area in that it is not the intent for PFRN brokers to carry a caseload. Instead, the overarching role is to support local networks of support to bridge and increase the cultural responsiveness of services.
Key areas of work include:
- Family-Focused Intercultural Practice Development: FRN Supports are provided on a continuum from Universal to Targeted to Intensive supports, different types of consultation can be provided based on where on the continuum services and supports fall:
o Universal programming
- Consultation for universal programs (e.g. Parent-Child programs, Parent Education, and Early Childhood Development programs) will focus on supporting culturally responsive programming, such as Parenting in Two Cultures and programming to foster healthy bi-cultural identity development.
o Targeted and Intensive supports
- Case-specific consultation – background consultation for Home Visitation and other staff who are working with families 1:1.
- Direct family support – brief direct family support to facilitate relationship development between families and local service providers.
- This area of consultation is expected to be the primary area of work for PFRN Brokers
- Organization-Focused Intercultural Capacity Building: While the PFRN project has a broader mandate to provide Intercultural Capacity Building training opportunities, PFRN Brokers may support training sessions focused on building understanding of the cultural and contextual factors of their cultural community. This could include developing and presenting content on pre-migration experiences, migration pathways and implications, cultural communities in Canada, and post-migration challenges and opportunities.
- Specialized Network Facilitation: A key deliverable of the PFRN is development of a “specialized network”. The Intake & Community Navigator role will be primarily responsible for this area of work, to catalyze and deepen relationships between FRNs, settlement sector supports, and ethnocultural community organizations and natural leaders. PFRN Brokers will also play a role specific to their cultural communities. This can include supporting connections with ethnocultural community organizations, natural leaders and FRNs, as well as identifying culturally and linguistically matched staff in FRNs, Settlement organizations, and other local agencies.
