Overview
The Shelter Support Worker plays a crucial role in providing assistance and support to individuals experiencing homelessness or crisis situations during the Winter Months. This position involves creating a safe and welcoming environment while ensuring the well-being of shelter residents. The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal skills, a compassionate nature, and the ability to work in a harm reduction and trauma-informed capacity - effectively empowering residents and meeting their various needs.
Duties
- Support and build relationship with shelter residents, ensuring a welcoming and safe environment.
- Provide emotional support and encouragement to residents, helping them navigate their challenges.
- Assist in the intake process for new residents, including orientation to shelter policies and procedures.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization within the shelter premises, ensuring a welcoming atmosphere.
- Collaborate with social services and community organizations to connect residents with necessary resources.
- Document incidents, resident progress, and any relevant information.
- Participate in staff meetings and training sessions to enhance skills and knowledge related to shelter operations.
Requirements
- Previous experience in social services or related fields is preferred.
- Strong understanding of harm reduction and trauma informed care.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with an emphasis on active listening.
- Compassionate demeanor with a genuine desire to meet others where they are at without judgement.
- Ability to handle crisis situations calmly and professionally while maintaining confidentiality.
- Flexibility to work overnight shifts, including weekends as needed.
- Lived experience (5 years +) is considered an asset.
This position is essential for safety and wellness for those living unsheltered during the winter months. Fresh Start Services provides a low barrier shelter; we operate a non-gendered shelter that welcomes couples, pets etc.
Job Types: Part-time, Casual
Pay: $23.00 per hour
Expected hours: 5 – 37.5 per week
