This position is located at the NAIT’s Centre for Boreal Research in Peace River, Alberta. Peace River is a vibrant community of approximately 6,700 people in the heart of the Boreal Forest of Northwest Alberta. It offers a variety of urban amenities but with a small town feel!

The position “Research Assistant - Plant and Seed Technologies” will support the development of methods and technics to collect, treat, enhance and deploy plant propagules on disturbed boreal sites. The position will have two primary functions. The first will be focused on building capacity in terms of field based, greenhouse and laboratory activities (design and execution) related to increasing knowledge and practical methodology around plant and seed delivery systems. The second function will be to assist with write-up of proposals, scientific manuscripts and industry reporting and presentation of research results at workshops and conferences.
The successful candidate must be willing to move to Peace River, Alberta for the duration of this position.
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct applied research projects using one or more of the following:
- Conduct literature reviews
- Search, selection, and request of supplies necessary for the project
- Manage and respond to project related email
- Field, Lab and Greenhouse related experiment design, execution and data collection (with a large focus on field activities)
- Supervise summer research assistants
- Field work in a variety of locations and climatic conditions
- Engage in knowledge mobilization and training within communities
- Assist with proposal writing, prepare technical reports of completed project for the client, for presentation to agency requesting project, or for use in further applied or theoretical research activities
Skills & Abilities:
- The ideal candidate will have knowledge in the analysis of data sets and versatility in a working environment that presents a wide variety of technical and operational challenges.
- Knowledge and experience in plant physiology is a strong asset.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills is essential to this role.
- This position does periodically require shift work, heavy manual labor for field project set up.
Qualifications:
- Diploma, BSc or MSc in forest ecology, reclamation, and plant physiology
- At least 2 years of related experience (BSc); 1 year or less for MSc.
- Experience in experimental design and execution
- Driver’s license
- Equivalencies may be considered
Applicants with education credentials earned outside of Canada should have their credentials evaluated by World Education Services or the International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS).
Remuneration: $ 56,151.16- $ 74,115.34 annually, plus a comprehensive benefits package. (Classification – Research Assistant II).
This position is covered by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) Collective Agreement.
