The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for a Research Assistant. This Fixed Term Recurring Part-time position is for approximately x months/year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
This position reports to the Principal Investigator.
The primary purpose of this position is to provide technical support in the form of animal-side research assistance to the research team during field trips and barn work. The position assists with data collection, data curation and data analysis while maintaining clear communication with the investigating researchers. Facilitates the safety of self and team members by mitigating the hazards of working with cattle under field conditions in adherence with the animal welfare guidelines established by the Canadian Council of Animal Care.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
- Assist in planning and implementing animal research in accordance with the research protocols
- Practice safe animal handling in strict adherence with Canadian Council of Animal Care guidelines
- Responsible for supporting the research team with collection, data curation and data analysis
- Facilitate workplace safety by mitigating the risks of working with cattle
- Communicate effectively with research team members to coordinate research activities and be responsible for completing designated tasks
Qualifications / Requirements:
- Prior experience and training in cattle handling, research data collection, management of data and statistical analysis are required
- Must have completed an Institutional Animal User Training Program (Basic Animal Care and Use Course [Part-1] and Practical Cattle-specific Techniques Training Course [Part-2]) from a Canadian university
- A university degree in animal science or a related field with at least 3 years of experience working with adult cattle is highly desired
- Postgraduate training in animal science-related research would be an asset
- Proficiency with Microsoft applications (Word, Excel) and with statistical analysis using SAS, SPSS or R software is essential
