POSITION SUMMARY:
The Rehabilitation Assistant carries out assigned patient care treatment as prescribed by the Physiotherapist (PT)/Occupational Therapist (OT) and assists the therapist(s) with record keeping, work scheduling, and client related activities.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Prepare, organize and conduct group activities with patients as assigned;
- Prepare, conduct and follow through on individual therapeutic functions with patients as assigned;
- Report to Registered Nurse/Registered Practical Nurse pertinent information regarding patients;
- Transport patients as required;
- Facilitate groups for therapeutic exercise;
- Provide groups to ensure socialization and mental stimulation e.g. current events, discussions and games (trivial pursuit, spelling bees, etc.);
- Provide groups to maintain life skills, e.g. baking, woodwork, gardening and crafts;
- Provide groups for patients with special needs e.g. low vision, sensory stimulation, breakfast and lunch programs;
- Read medical records of patients in order to assist in implementing treatment under the supervision of the Director, Patient Care or delegate;
- Participate in wheelchair inspection program.
- Graduate (diploma or certificate) of PTA/OTA recognized community college program (e.g. Humber College "Physiotherapy Assistant/Occupational Therapy Assistant Program" or its equivalent in the area of rehabilitation or health sciences;
- The candidate will have proven abilities and experience working with the aged who have physical and/or cognitive disabilities;
- Good listening, observation and communication skills are essential;
- The ability to work independently, learn quickly and set priorities;
- Establishing a comfortable and understanding rapport with patients and a good, confident working relationships with the inter-professional team is important;
- The candidate must demonstrate caring and compassion in interactions with patients and their families;
- Very good attendance record;
- Good performance record.
