$88,351 - $111,872 a year
Calgary, Alberta
Our organization:
The Alberta Securities Commission (ASC) is the industry-funded regulator responsible for administering the province's securities laws. It is entrusted with fostering a fair and efficient capital market in Alberta and with protecting investors. As a member of the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA), the ASC works to improve, coordinate and harmonize the regulation of Canada's capital markets.

The Market Regulation division oversees equities and derivatives marketplaces, registrants (dealers, advisers, and investment fund managers), market infrastructure entities and industry self-regulatory organizations. With a dynamic team of investment and financial professionals, we are involved in leading-edge projects aimed at balancing effective regulation with our stakeholders’ need for innovation and efficient capital markets.

The opportunity:

Reporting to the Manager, Derivatives Oversight, this 15-month contract position provides an opportunity to work with a diverse team of professionals overseeing derivatives exchanges, clearing agencies, trade repositories and commodity brokers. The successful candidate will gain valuable regulatory insight into key areas of the derivatives market and help identify emerging risks and develop regulatory solutions to mitigate them.

This practical, hands-on role provides the opportunity to develop highly transferable skills and regulatory knowledge in risk management, compliance, and infrastructure integrity, which can pave way for future opportunities in areas such as regulatory affairs, internal audit, finance and investment.

Why work with us

The ASC offers a hybrid work environment and flexibility, a competitive total rewards package consisting of 100 per cent employer-paid benefits, effective your first day of employment. These benefits include a comprehensive health and dental plan, flex days; an employee family program; transportation allowance, and a generous flexible spending account. We also encourage fun and giving back to the community with initiatives offered through our ASC Social Club and annual United Way Campaign.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Assisting with oversight and compliance activities for derivatives exchanges, commodity brokers and clearing agencies and trade repositories.
  • Performing oversight reviews of regulated entities, including conducting annual risk assessments, planning and executing on-site examinations, reviewing subsequent findings with the entities’ senior management, and preparing reports and presenting findings to ASC executive management.
  • Conducting research to inform derivatives market policy initiatives and oversight activities, and providing input and technical expertise in the development of local and national trading rules and policies regarding energy marketplace operations.
  • Participating in various projects in support of divisional, operational and strategic initiatives.
The ideal candidate will possess:
  • A university degree in business, finance, economics or a related discipline. A CPA, CA designation would be considered an asset.
  • Five to eight years of experience in roles of increasing responsibility conducting audits and examinations, preferably in public practice.
  • A working knowledge of Alberta’s capital markets with exposure to regulation, compliance and marketplace and exchange operations would be an asset.
  • Experience with business process reviews, internal controls testing and IT general controls would be an asset.
  • An interest in learning and gaining a deep understanding of Alberta’s capital markets, including Alberta and North American power, gas and/or crude markets.
  • Strong research, analytical and critical-thinking skills, the ability to independently formulate, support and articulate opinions and recommendations.
  • Solid written and presentation skills with the ability to present ideas to audiences with varying levels of technical ability both verbally and in writing.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with personnel with various backgrounds, and at various levels, of an organization.
  • The proven ability to be flexible, adaptable and manage multiple deadlines and priorities in a changing environment.
  • The ability to work both independently and within a team, and able to perform responsibilities with limited direct supervision.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving abilities combined with a proactive approach to addressing new or complex issues.
