Job Summary
The Project Manager is responsible for fostering teams to develop, submit, and then maintain research proposals at the UBC Centre for Disease Control (UBC CDC). Successful proposals will require management and overall coordination of grant activities (e.g., budgets, funder reporting, ensuring Principal Investigators are aware of deliverables). The Project Manager supports the investigators, and the team associated with research grants and other projects as assigned. Reporting to the Strategic Research Partnerships Manager and working with the Principal Investigators (PI’s) and Project Leaders, you will play a key role in fostering research success by working with established objectives, milestones, and budgets for various research projects and grants, and monitor and facilitate progress against these objectives and milestones. Projects will involve infectious disease and public health research.

Organizational Status
The UBC CDC is the academic arm of the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC), and this role is a UBC position embedded at BCCDC. UBC CDC interacts with the research community at the centre and UBC. This position is located at BCCDC but may work remotely as needed.

Work Performed

• Identify funding opportunities, communicate them to PI’s and Project Leaders, organize teams to discuss proposals, determine internal UBC and funder timelines, help establish budgets for research proposals, ensure PI’s are aware of deadlines, UBC policy requirements, ethics, biohazard, and other requirements
• For successful proposals, arrange meeting coordination and follow-up, assist with progress reports, statement of work documents, compliance documents, monitoring budgets and expenditures, milestones, deadlines and objectives
• Work with RDU team members for HR and finance matters, including recruitment and hiring of research staff on projects as well as monitoring project spending through UBC finance systems
• Coordinate research progress and close-out reports including financial and metrics reports
• Presentation creation for projects
• Support manuscript preparation and submission
• Recommend process improvements and strategies for strengthening project management methods
• Support centre-wide and external high-profile knowledge translation activities including Grand Rounds lecture series, Research Week, and special events and workshops
• Liaise with grant/core funding agencies
• Interact directly with research collaborators and teams as required
• Assist with day-to-day operational items as needed
• Perform other related duties

Consequence of Error/Judgement
Errors in performance of the above-related duties could have a significant impact on the image, reputation and financial status of the centre.

Supervision Received
The incumbent will work independently and receive supervision from the Senior Project Manager as needed.

Supervision Given
The incumbent will work independently and receive supervision from the Strategic Research Partnerships Manager as needed .

Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of three years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• Postgraduate degree in a field relevant to infectious disease and/or public health preferred.
• Project management experience required.
• Work experience in a research and/or health environment required.
• Experience with CIHR and other grant applications preferred.
• Experience and understanding of the principles of EDI.
• Demonstrated ability to compose and write reports, letters and other materials in clear, concise English.
• Knowledge of UBC and PHSA policies and procedures.
• Knowledge of funding landscape and grant administration.
• General understanding of basic finance and human resource management.
• Proficiency using Microsoft 365 including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, OneDrive and MS Project.
• Experience using Workday, Zoom, Skype and SharePoint 2013 an asset.
• Training and/or education in scientific or technical writing an asset.
• Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment.
• Ability to prioritize and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines.
• Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and priorities.
• Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
