The Ministry of Education, W. Ross Macdonald School for the Blind, has an exciting opportunity for a dedicated individual in the role of Orientation and Mobility Instructor. You will work under the direction of the Student Support Manager to provide and implement orientation and mobility instruction for students who are visually impaired.

About the job

  • Provide orientation and mobility instruction for visually impaired students.
  • Develop and implement individualized programs.
  • Assist each student to gain a good understanding of their environment.
  • Explore various types of orientation and mobility services.
  • Provide each student with instruction in mobility skills to enable them to travel as independently as possible.
  • Provide night evaluation and night instruction when needed for students who have difficulty travelling at night and/or have night blindness.

What you bring to the team


Mandatory requirements

  • College certification from a recognized educational Orientation and Mobility instructor program and/or equivalent training, education and working experience in a child related field.
  • Current First Aid, CPR and Crisis Prevention Intervention training and/or Behaviour Management Systems Training or equivalent.


Skills and Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and implement suitable programs geared to the needs of each individual student.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, policies, procedures, guidelines, and practices.
  • Sound judgement/organization/planning skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to work as a member of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Ability and willingness to work shifts.
