The OH Ranch, gifted to the Calgary Stampede in 2012, is one of the oldest working ranches in southern Alberta, encompassing 8,000 acres of rich natural grassland, wildlife habitat, and historic significance.

Today, the OH Ranch operates as a cow-calf operation, supports young Calgary Stampede bucking stock, offers spring and summer grazing, hosts educational programs, provides controlled access for hunting and recreational activities, and plays a vital role in land stewardship and biodiversity conservation.

Position Summary:

The OH Ranch Administrator is a vital position within the Agriculture & Western Events team. Reporting to the Manager of Agriculture and Western Events Operations, the Administrator partners closely with the OH Ranch Manager to coordinate daily operations and ensure the Ranch is run efficiently, sustainably, and in alignment with its core values and conservation principles.

This role involves administrative oversight, coordination of livestock and land-use practices, budgeting support, event and education planning, stakeholder relationship management, and contributing to the stewardship and public visibility of the Ranch.

Key Responsibilities:

Responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to:

Team & Operational Coordination

  • Coordinate and support the management of ranch staff and contractors.
  • Oversee work plans and delegate responsibilities to support ranch operations.

Financial Coordination

  • Assist in budget tracking and financial reporting with the Ranch Manager.
  • Analyze cost-efficiency opportunities and support revenue generation strategies.

Environmental Stewardship & Land Use

  • Support land and environmental management plans including:
    • Grazing and water management
    • Drought/fire preparedness
    • Compliance with Environmental Farm Plans and Alberta Agriculture standards
  • Collaborate with stakeholders such as Nature Conservancy of Canada, Alberta Environment & Parks, and Foothills County.

Contract & Procurement Support

  • Coordinate and negotiate supply procurement and vendor/service agreements.
  • Assist with livestock and equipment purchasing.

Livestock Health & Management

  • Help oversee daily care of the cow-calf herd (approx. 305 head), nutrition, vaccinations, and animal welfare.
  • Participate in biosecurity, feed planning, and emergency animal response procedures.
  • Seasonal grazing of Bucking Horses from the Stampede Ranch.

Administrative Planning & Maintenance Coordination

  • Assist in maintaining the five-year capital improvement and equipment maintenance plans.
  • Participate in health & safety planning, guideline development, and compliance tracking.
  • Support government grant applications and water infrastructure planning.

Education & Private Programming

  • Support the delivery and scheduling of ~40 days of educational programming annually.
  • Assist with coordination of private special events hosted at the Ranch.

Community Engagement & Brand Awareness

  • Help coordinate and grow community-facing initiatives like Open Farm Days, Cowgirls Trail Ride, and local agriculture events (e.g., FFGA, 4H).
  • Promote the OH Ranch brand at industry events and within the local community.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Post-secondary diploma or associate degree in Agriculture Business, Animal Sciences, Livestock Production, or a related field.

Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years of related experience in agriculture, livestock, or ranch operations.
  • Proven administrative, financial, and coordination experience in a ranch or agricultural setting.

Skills & Attributes:

  • Strong horsemanship and understanding of ranch horse handling.
  • Proficient in financial record-keeping and budget management.
  • Effective problem-solving, decision-making, and data analysis skills.
  • Comfortable working within a large organizational structure.
  • Capable of independently managing projects with sound judgment.
  • Skilled at managing relationships with employees, contractors, and community partners.
  • Familiar with infrastructure, mechanical, and maintenance basics (e.g., plumbing, carpentry, electrical).
  • Strong communicator and contributor to a team-oriented culture.

Physical demands:

  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule including holidays, evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to work outside in all types of weather.
  • Frequent lifting, pushing, crouching, bending, kneeling, reaching.
  • Fast-paced environment, work under pressure, attention to detail and hand-eye co-ordination.
  • Combination of sitting, walking and standing for extended periods.
  • Occasional lifting up to 80 lbs. and pushing / pulling up to 100 lbs.
  • Frequent repetitive arm, hand and finger movements.
  • Exposure to animals in action, noise, dust, fumes, gases, odours, animal dander, changes in temperature and confined workspace inside grain bins.
  • Frequent and long periods on horseback.
  • Accurate visual acuity, color vision, sense of smell and touch are required and conversational auditory skills.
  • Frequent climbing and occasional climbing with a load.
