Workplace Safety and Health enforces The Workplace Safety and Health Act and its associated regulations in order to protect the safety and health of workers in Manitoba. Workplace Safety and Health's Inspection and investigation activity focuses on improving legislative compliance in order to eliminate workplace fatalities, injuries and illnesses.
Conditions of Employment:
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
- Must be able to provide and maintain a satisfactory Criminal Record Check.
- Valid Class 5F Manitoba driver's licence with satisfactory driver's abstract and able to operate a Government-owned/leased vehicle.
- Able to work on-call and outside regular working hours.
- Eligible to write the American Board of Industrial Hygiene Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) exam or Registered Occupational Hygienist (ROH) exam. Note: Candidates who do not meet this condition at the time of hire may be considered on an underfill basis (IG1)
- Able to travel throughout the Province, and stay overnight to carry-out responsibilities of the position. Able to work outside, in various environmental conditions. Able to meet the physical demands, which include prolonged driving and walking, as well as periods of climbing, crawling, bending, and kneeling.
Qualifications:
Essential:
- Degree in biological, chemical, environmental, or physical sciences, chemical or industrial engineering, public health, or health discipline.
- Experience working as a professional industrial or occupational hygienist.
- Extensive knowledge of specialized occupational hygiene terminology, principles and methodology.
- Experience operating occupational hygiene equipment, analyzing results and interpreting acts, regulations, standards, and guidelines on matters related to occupational hygiene or health.
- Knowledge of occupational health and safety legislation, fundamentals, principles, rights, duties and responsibilities.
- Knowledge of occupational hygiene practices (including evaluation, assessments, air sampling and analysis, noise monitoring and related equipment.
- Excellent written communication skills.
- Excellent verbal communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work in a team and manage conflict professionally.
- Ability to exercise sound reason, judgment and discretion.
- Ability to work independently, with strong organizational and time management skills.
- Computer proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Certification as an Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or Registered Occupational Hygienist (ROH).
- Experience working in northern communities or in First Nations communities.
Duties:
The Occupational Hygienist conducts inspections and investigations in all sector groups on matters related to occupational health including fatalities, right to refuse situations, serious incidents and other related complaints. The position uses technical equipment and expertise to recognize, evaluate and determine compliance related to the control of occupational health hazards. Assignments are completed in accordance with The Workplace Safety and Health Act, the Workplace Safety and Health Regulation, The Hazardous Product Act , and the operational procedures set by the Branch. The Occupational Hygienist's work involves: conducting inspections and investigations ; assisting workers, employers, safety and health professionals and medical personnel to identify and resolve issues related to chemical, biological or physical health hazards; issuing improvement and stop work orders; and providing information to improve awareness of and compliance with safety and health legislation. The position may be called upon to give evidence at an inquest related to an incident or fatality or provide evidence before the Manitoba Labour Board.
