About the role:

Modular MAX Platform Tooling Team is looking for a fearless and inventive engineering leader—someone who thrives in the unexplored, finds clarity in ambiguity, and knows how to turn chaos into compilers, profilers, and debuggers.

You're not afraid of tackling systems that don't yet exist. You're excited by the challenge of bootstrapping foundational tooling for a brand-new language - Mojo and building the infrastructure that will empower the next generation of AI developers. You understand that great tools shape great software, and that precision and joy are not mutually exclusive.

We’re seeking an Engineering Manager who will lead and grow a team, brings a hands-on mindset, deep systems experience, and a product-first attitude to lead the development of:

• A low-latency, deeply integrated debugger for Mojo

• A modern, intuitive profiler that reveals performance bottlenecks across heterogeneous hardware

• A scalable build system that understands AI workloads and accelerates iteration

• Internal developer infrastructure that unblocks Modular engineers and external contributors alike

You’ll help define the roadmap, write code when it matters, and grow a world-class team. You’ll collaborate closely with compiler engineers, Mojo language designers, AI infra experts, and the broader open-source community.

If you know when to break the rules and when to build new ones, and if you think building elegant tools is just as satisfying as building AI models, this might be your ship.

LOCATION: Candidates based in the US or Canada are welcome to apply. You can work in our office in Los Altos, CA or remotely from home. Onboarding for new hires is conducted in-person in our Los Altos, CA office.

What you bring to the table:

• 5+ years of relevant domain experience
• 3+ years of proven experience leading engineering teams (preferably in systems, compilers, or language tooling)
• Deep knowledge of one or more of: debuggers (e.g., LLDB, GDB), profilers (e.g., Perf, VTune), build systems (e.g., Bazel, Ninja), or dev infra
• Passion for high-performance computing, developer experience, or AI infrastructure
• Ability to operate in ambiguous environments and chart a clear path
• Strong software engineering skills in C++, Rust, Python, or similar

Helpful but not required:

• Experience contributing to or maintaining open-source tooling
• Familiarity with LLVM, MLIR, or other compiler toolchains
• Experience with heterogeneous hardware (CPU, GPU, ASIC) profiling or build orchestration
• Mojo curiosity, Python love, C++ scars

The estimated base salary range for this role to be performed in the US, regardless of the state, is $234,000.00 - $286,000.00 USD. 
The estimated base salary range for this role to be performed in Canada, regardless of the province, is $221,000.00 - $270,000.00 CAD.
The salary for the successful applicant will depend on a variety of permissible, non-discriminatory job-related factors, which include but are not limited to education, training, work experience, business needs, or market demands. This range may be modified in the future. The total compensation for a candidate will also include annual target bonus, equity, and benefits, with equity making up a significant portion of your total compensation.
