JOB SUMMARY:

The Manager, Student Mental Health leads in the development and implementation of a comprehensive strategy to support students with mental health concerns at Ontario Tech University. Reporting to the Director, Student Support Services, the Manager is responsible for the design and implementation of services and programs within Student Mental Health Services at Ontario Tech to promote student well being, development and success.

The Manager works in close collaboration with students, staff and faculty members across the campus to oversee the development, implementation and assessment of student mental health programs, services and resources. The Manager also liaises with other university offices, shared service areas and other local agencies to provide case management support and referrals for students with mental health concerns.

MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Leadership and Management

Duties: Provides leadership within the Student Life team for the development and delivery of mental health services and programs for students at both the north and downtown campus locations. This includes:

  • Developing and implementing short and long-term operational plans for Student Mental Health Services, consistent with the mandate and goals of Student Life and with the vision and mission of the university
  • Facilitating the establishment of goals and priorities for unit programs, designing and implementing tools to assess the achievement of those outcomes, analyze student needs, and promote continuous improvement, and preparing reports to demonstrate program effectiveness and success
  • Leading a staff of counsellors, advisors, and administrative staff, as well as student staff and volunteers to maintain a high level of performance within the unit through effective hiring, supervision, performance review and development, and ongoing coaching, and mentoring
  • Providing ongoing clinical support and supervision to the team of counsellors, and consultations to the University community
  • Leads in the development and implementation of programs and campaigns to promote a common understanding of student mental health and its correlation with student success.
  • Managing the Health and Wellness budget, tracking special accounts for reporting purposes (e.g., contracted psychological services), and developing budget submissions to ensure appropriate management and accountability of funds
  • Keeping abreast of current developments and emerging trends in student mental health and health promotion through active participation in conferences and workshops, professional organizations, and research/literature
  • Undertaking new strategic initiatives within the Office of Student Life as requested
  • Ensuring that the required policies, procedures, and standards are being upheld

2. Student Counselling and Development

Duties: Leads in the administration, delivery and assessment of counselling support
and assistance for students with mental health concerns by:
  • Overseeing the design and delivery of services and programs to support students with emerging mental health concerns
  • Oversees the development and implementation of programs to raise awareness and develop capacity among faculty, staff and student staff to respond to early indications of student concern
  • Overseeing the provision of counselling, case management, outreach and crisis intervention and sexual violence therapeutic support for students, both in person and online, to promote positive mental health, including the assessment of student needs and level of risk, the application of mental health assessment instruments, the development and implementation of individualized self-management plans, student referrals and complaints resolution
  • Overseeing the provision of consultation to staff and faculty to support students with mental health concerns
  • Facilitating a circle of care network with campus and community partners for students with ongoing mental health concerns to provide case management support and follow through
  • Facilitating partnerships with campus student service providers and with medical and community care agencies to coordinate student support and referrals
  • Developing and implementing a response process for students in distress to affect a timely and appropriate response in coordination with other campus service providers
  • Overseeing the development and implementation of support groups and peer mentoring programs to assist students with common issues and concerns
  • Overseeing the preparation of reports and student case records in a manner consistent with professional and ethical standards
  • Designing and implementing tools to assess mental health services, analyze trends, promote continuous improvement, and demonstrate program effectiveness and success


Required Education:
  • A professional Master’s degree in social work, mental health and addictions, or counseling, clinical or educational psychology
  • Membership in College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) or other governing bodies regulating mental health in Ontario
  • Must meet Clinical Supervisor criteria set by a professional college regulating mental health in Ontario
  • A combination of education and experience may be considered for this role
Required Experience:
  • Five or more years of supervisory/management experience working in a mental health setting or with individuals with mental health needs, preferably in a post-secondary setting
Knowledge:
  • Training and/or experience in risk and threat assessment, non-violent crisis intervention, suicide intervention and mental health intervention strongly preferred
  • Experienced people manager with excellent communication, organizational and relationship building skills
  • Knowledge of local mental health service providers, mental health legislation and related procedures

Skills:
  • Demonstrated ability to conceptualize and implement new programs, interact at all levels within the organization, and effectively manage budget and human resource issues
  • Demonstrated ability to solve complex student problems in a collaborative team environment
  • Excellent coaching skills to guide students, staff and faculty through complex student issues
  • Demonstrated ability to build collaborative relationships both inside and outside of the organization
  • Intercultural competency
  • Excellent tact, diplomacy and judgment are required in working with student, staff, faculty and external agencies
