Maintenance Assistant

We are currently looking to fill 2 permanent, full-time positions for a Maintenance Assistant for our Farms Facilities Department at our Leamington, ON location.

The Maintenance Assistant is responsible for supporting the smooth, safe, and efficient operation of our greenhouse farm, which specializes in the production of fresh fruits and vegetables. This position is hands-on and agricultural in nature, with responsibilities that include general maintenance and repairs of greenhouse structures, systems, and equipment. They work closely with the maintenance & growing team to support a productive and safe growing environment.

Job Specific Duties

• Assist in maintaining greenhouse systems, including climate controls, irrigation, and heating systems.
• Perform minor routine repairs, troubleshooting, and preventative maintenance.
• Support crop changeouts and greenhouse resets with keeping required tools in repair.
• Assist in maintaining, repairing, and adjusting greenhouse operational tools and equipment (e.g., picking carts, hand tools, air filters, irrigation pumps).
• Use and maintain hand tools, power tools, and material-handling equipment to complete assigned duties.
• Ensure all tools and machinery are in safe and proper working condition and are stored in an organized manner.
• Check and manage maintenance tickets using the internal ticketing system.
• Prioritize and coordinate tasks with the Maintenance Team.
• Record accurate documentation of completed work and close tickets in a timely manner.
• Assist with basic carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical repairs (e.g., door repairs, locker assembly, light replacement, fixing leaks).
• Help replace greenhouse glass panels, maintain HVAC components, and address emergency facility repairs as needed.
• Support general property upkeep including greenhouse perimeter cleanliness.
• Perform outdoor maintenance such as snow removal from entrances and walkways using approved equipment.
• Comply with all Health & Safety, Food Safety, and Biosecurity protocols specific to greenhouse farming.
• Report safety concerns, faulty operations, or defective materials immediately to senior maintenance personnel.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free work environment at all times.
• Must comply with all Health and Safety, Food Safety, Bio Security, and Nature Fresh Policies and Procedures.

Qualifications

• General farm maintenance experience are assets.
• Experience utilizing both manual and electrical tools.
• Experience using hand and electrical tools.
• Ability to read manuals and drawings an asset.
• Basic math abilities required.
• Ability to analyze and reason problems and issues, pays attention to detail.
• Must have great written and verbal communication skills.
• Must be committed to safety protocols, maintaining a neat work environment.
• Available to work on-call evenings and weekends, ensuring timely response to emergencies.
• Must be dedicated to continuous learning.
• Valid driver license and use of personal vehicle are required.

Working Conditions

• Some confidentiality in regard to company-related matters.
• Multi-tasking, time management and prioritizing are essential.
• Able to work independently but also a good team player.
• The Maintenance employee is expected to report to work from Monday-Saturday with the possibility of after-hours or on call.
• The warehouses/greenhouses may be hot, humid or cold at any time of the year.
• Exposure to pests in the greenhouse.
• Safety shoes required.
• Travel from one location to the next or phase to phase may be required.
• Working at heights may be required.

Physical Requirements

• The Maintenance Assistant will be required to do some heavy lifting, digging etc. It would be beneficial to be physically fit.
• Must be able to complete all physical requirements of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation.
