We are seeking a mature, responsible, committed, and self-motivated individual to fill the Elmwood Literacy Intern position with United for Literacy.
With generous support from the Province of Manitoba –Ministry of municipal relations, community development branch the Literacy Intern will design and deliver literacy programs and workshops for children, youth and families living in Elmwood.
This role requires superior organizational, time management, planning, excellent technical skills, and ability to work with a variety of computer programs. The literacy Intern will have solid communication and facilitation skills, the ability to create and maintain positive relationships with participants and the community. They will need to be flexible combined with a positive attitude in a demanding and dynamic work environment.
United for Literacy Interns work very closely as a team with our partners, and United for Literacy volunteers. All United for Literacy positions work under the remote mentoring/supervision and report directly to the Community Coordinator, and/or Regional Manager.
Your main responsibilities and major duties:
· Assist in the recruitment and screening of volunteers to support programs.
· Develop and facilitate an after-school Reading Circle program at River Elm School to students in grades 3 to 4 (Once a week 3:15 to 5:15, day to be determined)
· Design and deliver a series of family literacy workshops for families in partnership with the Elmwood Tots Parent-Child Coalition (Bi-weekly 9:00 to 11:30 Tuesday or Thursday, day to be determined)
· Develop and facilitate an online homework club for students at Elmwood High School. (6:00 to 7:00 pm, day to be determined)
· Develop and facilitate a daytime Bookworms program at Lord Selkirk School for students in grades 1 (Once a week, day to be determined)
· Ensure proper and accurate collection of statistical information to report to funder during and at the end of the project.
· Ensure adherence to all program directives and deliverables while maintaining and working within a specified budget.
· Support special events in the school and community at large.
Skills, Attributes and Requirements
- Valid Manitoba Driver License and access to a reliable vehicle
- Minimum 18 years old.
- Demonstrated experience working with groups of children, youth, or families.
- Experience with program planning and management

- Previous knowledge and experience with United for Literacy programs
· An interest in a career in teaching, social work, literacy/community development would be ideal.
- A valid First Aid Certificate

Pay: $19.00 per hour
