Reporting to the Junior School Vice Principal, the Library Technician performs tasks in collaboration with the Teacher Librarian in the Junior and Middle/Senior Schools to encourage and develop a collaborative learning environment utilizing the methodology and practices of Learning Commons. The Library Technician supports teachers, parents and students in benefiting from a library experience focused on learning and community.


Roles and Responsibilities:

  • These may include, but are not limited to...


Library collection:


  • Manage circulation of the library collection, including check-in and check-out of

materials, updating patron records and regular inventory;

  • Process new materials for the collection through original and copy cataloguing, including

but not limited to library books, textbooks, DVDs, media equipment and educational kits;

  • Repair books in the library collection as needed;
  • Maintain the circulation of media equipment (cameras & video cameras, DVD

players);

  • Liaise with the accounting department to ensure that overdue or lost items fines are paid,

where appropriate.

Learning and patron support

  • Assist the teacher librarians with weekly classroom library visits and the circulation

process;

  • Assist students and teachers with finding books and other library materials, and in

the use of e-resources, digital media, and equipment;

  • Assist in promoting the library learning commons through book displays,

advertisement of library events, posters and decorations;

  • Assist with any fundraising opportunities (e.g. Scholastic Book Fair);
  • Assist teachers with any inquiries and library resources necessary to teach the school

curriculum by ordering new books and maintaining the resource lists;

  • Assist Heads of Department with ordering, cataloguing, and circulating textbooks and

course resources;

  • Provide PYP UOI books for classroom use, with appropriate communication with

classroom teachers and the PYP coordinator.


Library communication
:

  • Supervise students in the library learning commons including lunch time and after school;
  • Organise, schedule and communicate with parent volunteers that serve the library;
  • Maintain a supportive and helpful presence in all library locations.

Library function

  • Oversee the shelving, general upkeep and maintenance of the library;
  • Order supplies necessary for repairing books, classifying the collection and keeping the

library tidy and functional;

  • Maintain the library laminator, ordering supplies and changing out film rolls as well as

assisting staff with any laminating jobs;

  • Other tasks assigned to support the critical role of the library in student learning and the

school community.


Qualifications and Education Requirements:

  • Equivalent of two years college-level course work in library science (or Library Technician


Certificate); course or program in museum and/or archival studies is an asset;

  • Demonstrated success working in a library setting; background in Learning Commons is an

asset;

  • Experience with library cataloguing systems; specific experience with Follett is an asset;
  • Good organizational skills; ability to manage time and prioritize tasks;
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team;
  • Familiarity with automated business equipment such as photocopiers, audiovisual

equipment, etc.;

  • Exercise tact, courtesy, discretion and sound judgment;
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and customer service skills;
  • Intermediate skills with Apple’s Mac suite and Google applications;
  • In good physical condition, ability to stand for long periods of time and handle physical

tasks related to library maintenance (e.g. ability to lift 10 kg); and,

  • Valid First Aid Certificate preferred.
