The Opportunity
Comco is seeking an junior HSE Advisor with a strong background in warehousing, material handling, trucking, and team leadership – someone who knows what it’s like to operate a forklift, load/unload trucks, and lead a crew. The ideal candidate also has hands-on exposure to safety responsibilities, such as participating in hazard assessments, conducting toolbox talks, mentoring others on safe work practices, or assisting in incident reporting.
This role is a great fit for someone who believes in the importance of safety, has earned the respect of their peers, and is ready to grow into a dedicated safety career. Comco will support the successful candidate in pursuing post-secondary HSE training and certifications, while providing opportunities to further develop as a trusted safety leader. You will report to the Corporate HSE Manager and work alongside other HSE Advisors.
The ideal candidate will be a visible, approachable leader who will coach, influence, and drive safe work practices while ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements and corporate HSE policies. This position will have 70/30 split of Operations (inside warehouse/ outside yard) and Office environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Be a visible, approachable resource for employees on safe product handling, loading/unloading techniques, forklift operation, and warehouse practices.
- Provide coaching and guidance to employees on safe work techniques, ensuring they feel comfortable raising questions and concerns.
- Conduct and participate in workplace inspections, hazard assessments, and safety meetings.
- Conduct incident investigations, complete documentation, and ensure corrective actions are implemented in a timely manner.
- Deliver orientations and training for new hires, contractors, and existing staff.
- Help maintain training records, PPE programs, and contractor safety documentation.
- Collaborate with managers, foreman, and the HSE Department to implement and improve policies, procedures, and training activities.
- Contribute to building a positive safety culture across all branches.
- Travel occasionally to other branch locations to support HSE initiatives.
What We’re Looking For
- Strong background in warehousing, material handling, trucking, or industrial operations.
- Hands-on equipment experience (forklift experience strongly preferred).
- Proven leadership experience (e.g., foreman, lead hand, or supervisor role).
- Exposure to safety responsibilities such as: * Participating in hazard assessments or safety inspections * Leading or assisting with toolbox talks or safety meetings * Mentoring/coaching employees on safe work practices
- Supporting incident or near-miss reporting
- Excellent communication skills with a willingness to listen, coach, and teach.
- Genuine passion for safety and for creating safe workplaces.
- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
- Willingness to pursue post-secondary HSE training (supported by Comco).
- Ability to travel occasionally to support branch operations.
- Have working conditions including: standing, walking, pushing or pulling objects, climbing stairs/ladders, and ability to lift/carry heavy loads of 50lbs or more
Note:
- The candidate who is offered the position, must successfully complete pre-employment testing, including a urine drug test (including cannabis), audiometric testing, vision screening, and medical & physical health assessment.
- The candidate must also hold a class 5 driving license with a clean driver’s abstract.
