Position Summary

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Alberta invites applications for a full-time Academic Teaching Staff (ATS) member at the rank of Associate Lecturer for a three-year term appointment. This position will be in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (60%) and the ICE Incubator (40%). The ICE Incubator, part of the University of Alberta Faculty of Engineering's Innovation, Creativity, and Entrepreneurship (ICE) Program, offers students and recent alumni a dedicated space and experiential learning opportunities for technology commercialization and venture creation. Complementing this, the curriculum includes an introductory entrepreneurship course providing foundational start-up knowledge.

The successful candidate will contribute to the Faculty of Engineering by providing instruction to undergraduate and graduate students, participating in curriculum development, and engaging in Faculty and community service. This role involves teaching credit courses, mentoring students in design, entrepreneurship and technology commercialization projects, and supporting the delivery of mentorship programs.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Teaching of University Credit Courses:

The Industrial Professor will teach in the undergraduate and graduate degree programs

  • Provides instruction to undergraduate and/or graduate students (i.e. both in courses for credit and in co-curricular mentorship activities with the Faculty of Engineering ICE Incubator program).
  • Design course syllabus; order textbooks and other course materials as required; prepare, administer, and mark final exams/assignments; complete records related to grades; may be required to prepare and/or administer deferred exams (i.e. design, develop, and deliver co-curricular programming in technological innovation, product development, commercialization, and entrepreneurship).
  • Evaluates student performance progress and provides appropriate and timely feedback according to department protocols.
  • May provide supervision to undergraduate students.
  • Demonstrates scholarship and remains current and competent in the discipline or profession by keeping course syllabi and assignments relevant to the needs of the current student.
  • Abide by Faculty and University Academic policies.
  • Other duties normally required by ATS.

Teaching-Related Activities:

  • Attends course-related orientations, meetings and other activities related to teaching assignment (i.e. collaborate with other units, such as the Student Innovation Centre and eHUB).
  • May be required to teach additional LAB/SEM with compensation for the additional FTE.
  • May oversee GSA TAs assigned to the course(s).
  • Hold office hours as per department policy.
  • Assists in the management of teaching assignments.
  • Calls and chairs meetings.
  • Other duties normally required by ATS.

Service Contributions:

  • Participates in the development of curriculum and design of courses.
  • Participate in program continual improvement and accreditation processes.
  • Participates in the governance of the Department through committee membership.
  • Disseminates knowledge to the general public by making available their expertise and knowledge of the discipline.

Academic and/or Professional Qualifications

  • Advanced Degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering and at least ten years of relevant industrial experience.
  • The candidate must be licensed or be eligible to be licensed as a Professional Engineer in the Province of Alberta.

Skills & Competencies Considered an Asset

  • Knowledge of and experience with the Faculty of Engineering’s programs at the University of Alberta.
  • Previous teaching experience is preferred but not required. Ability to employ varied teaching strategies.
  • Ability to design or select and administer effective assessments.
  • Ability to collaborate with other units.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to adapt communication style and to collaborate effectively with colleagues.
  • Critical thinking and organizational ability.
  • Demonstrated facilitation, negotiation, and problem-solving skills, including the ability to manage challenging situations.
  • Technical proficiency in a computer environment and working knowledge of various applications for delivering teaching materials.
