Position Title / Rank: Assistant Professor in Food Science
Department: Food Science

Position Description:

The Department of Food Science at the University of Guelph invites applications for a tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor. The anticipated start date for this appointment is December 1, 2025, or a mutually agreed-upon date in 2025.

Applicants with a doctoral degree in food science or a related field specializing in product development, chemistry, omics, instrumental analysis, analytical chemistry, non-thermal technologies or related areas are invited to apply. Industrial experience is considered as an asset.

The successful candidate will significantly contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching, in courses preferably related to advanced food analysis, food chemistry, instrumental analysis, and principles in food science. Additionally, the faculty member will play an integral role with a team of faculty and staff in redesigning, relaunching, coordinating, and delivering innovative curricular strategies for a new course-based master’s program. This program aims to address emerging trends and challenges in food production, focusing on sustainability, waste reduction, and the development of healthy, safe, and affordable food. The applicants will have a demonstrated passion for teaching and science communication. Experience in adult education, teaching/learning scholarship, instructional skills, or industry extension workshops will be seen as an asset. Beyond teaching and service, the candidate will develop a collaborative research program, supported by external funding agencies or industrial partners, on topics complementary to other faculty members in the department. The distribution of effort of this appointment is expected to be 50% teaching, 30% research, and 20% service.

Founded in 1968, the Department of Food Science offers an undergraduate Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Food Science accredited through the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT). At the graduate level, the thesis-based degrees include MSc and PhD options and provide experiential learning opportunities for students wishing to explore the scientific process. Our established course-based MSc program in Food Safety and Quality Assurance (FSQA) enables students to enhance their qualifications through a more flexible plan with limited laboratory or industrial components.

Department of Food Science members highly value equity, diversity, and inclusivity as essential to foster innovation, collaboration, and creative problem-solving. We strive to maintain a supportive and collegial atmosphere where everyone is respected and valued, united by our shared commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and service.
