Your Opportunity:

You are a safety-focused professional with a strong understanding of health and safety regulations, ready to make a meaningful contribution to workplace safety. Alberta Precision Laboratories (APL) needs someone like you for the role of Health and Safety Advisor to support APL’s safety program. In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring compliance with occupational health and safety legislation and accreditation standards. Key responsibilities include conducting risk assessments, delivering safety training, and leading incident investigations and response efforts. You will collaborate with internal groups to promote a strong safety culture and support continuous improvement in safety practices. This position is part of the APL Safety Department, a provincial team supporting laboratory safety across Alberta. Based in the Calgary Zone, you will provide direct safety support to APL sites in the South Sector.

Description:

Reporting to the APL Safety Lead and Quality Reporting, Disciplines & Safety, the Health & Safety Advisor independently supports the planning and implementation of occupational safety programs across APL. The role involves developing initiatives, providing client support across departments and sites, and leading educational and project delivery efforts to enhance worker health, safety, and wellness. Key responsibilities include: Identifying hazards and communicating risks. Conducting some occupational hygiene and ergonomic assessments. Developing and overseeing safety training programs. Supporting incident management and regulatory reporting. Assisting operational leaders with urgent safety concerns. Collaborating with stakeholders to improve the Health and Safety Management System (HSMS).

Required Qualifications:

Degree, diploma, or certification in Occupational Health & Safety or a related field. CRSP designation required; if not held, candidate must be enrolled in an accredited program with a commitment to complete within 2 years. Minimum 3 years of experience in Occupational Health & Safety within a large, complex organization (healthcare experience is an asset). Proven ability to plan, execute, and evaluate projects. Strong problem-solving, investigation, and conflict resolution skills. Effective team leadership with coaching and decision-making capabilities. Skilled in building relationships with internal and external stakeholders. Excellent communication, organizational, and influencing skills. Ability to explain complex issues clearly and adapt to change.


Additional Required Qualifications:

Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development. Strong knowledge of APL Safety practices and the client group served. Experience coaching and supporting leaders. Skilled in developing and delivering presentations to share knowledge. Experience managing both physical and human resources, including financial and statistical data. Proven ability to lead and support change initiatives. Education and experience equivalencies may be considered. Experience in laboratory or healthcare settings is an asset. Applicant must reside in Calgary.


Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in coordinating research projects or teams, complex data analysis and/or interpretation, evaluation methodologies, and developing formal reports. Independence and ability to implement projects on their own.
