Job Description

Position: Health and Safety Specialist

Viola is a well-established mid-sized construction company headquartered in Markham, Ontario, with a strong track record of delivering comprehensive services to clients throughout the Greater Toronto Area.

As a Health and Safety Specialist you would be responsible for compliance training, maintaining accurate records of incidents and inspection findings to prepare reports useful in taking strategic safety decisions. It would be your responsibility to Identify, eliminate and control hazardous conditions that may lead to injury and or property damage using job specific safety standards, and best management practices. It is also your responsibility to have up-to-date knowledge of new HSE (Health, Safety and Environment) legislation as well as other developments that can impact the company.

Job Responsibilities:

· Monitor work processes and procedures to identify unsafe practices or breach of safety regulations.

· Monitor and perpetuate required safety documentation being submitted by our subcontractors.

· Conduct site visit reports with sub-contractors, visitors, and employees on new projects.

· Review daily JHAs, weekly toolbox talks, monthly and weekly site inspections to ensure compliance with all safety legislation, as well as Curbside's policies and procedures.

· Facilitate safety committee meetings as required.

· Attend meetings as required by clients.

· Ensure that management is informed about significant safety issues.

· Assist in managing Return-To-Work program.

· Organize compliance and safety training to educate company staff on necessary safety principles, including new hire orientation and ongoing training sessions.

· Conduct incident investigations, determine root causes, recommend, and implement corrective actions and preventative measures. Complete investigation reports.

· Collaborate with law enforcement agents and investigators to address cases of workplace incidents/ accidents.

· Prepare and present to company management periodic report of safety operations.

· Able to make recommendations on safety topics such as proper waste disposal, fire regulations, and noise.

· Conduct risk assessments to identify work areas with high risk of operational hazard. Ensure safety audits and workplace inspections are conducted at each work site. Prepare and submit audit documentation in accordance with standards.

· Review, update, develop, and implement company operational safety processes/procedures to ensure they are in line with external safety legislations.

· Other duties as assigned.

Skills:

· Problem-solving Skill: Needs to be well versed in developing safe operational strategies and solution to minimize workplace incidences.

· Organizational Skills: Coordination of general workplace operations to ensure compliance safety standards.

· Communication Skill: Provide company staff with useful safety information.

· Knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within the construction industry.

· Valid driver’s license and clean abstract.

· Well organized and can prioritize multiple tasks based on deadlines.

· Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.

· Capable of preserving confidential or sensitive information

· Must be proficient with computer and mobile applications

· Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint software.

Education and Training:

· Bachelor’s degree in risk management, engineering, safety management, or in a related discipline.

· Certification from recognized occupational health and safety body.

· Experience in COR and/or ISO 45001 standards is preferred.

· Knowledge of OHS Act and Regulations.
