Synopsis:

The Mission of the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) Thrift Shops is to create local and global impact through innovative nonprofit enterprises. Through over 85 shops across North America, revenue is generated for MCC’s global relief and development projects, and for local communities through Community Support programs and MCC Saskatchewan’s local Programs. As part of the MCC Thrift North American network, MCC Saskatchewan (MCCS) owns and operates 6 MCC Thrift shops in Saskatchewan. The shops are in Herbert, Lanigan, Rosthern, Warman, Saskatoon and Swift Current.

MCC is a charitable organization that works with partners worldwide to walk with people who are disadvantaged. MCC supports activities that provide emergency assistance, reduce poverty, and promote healthy communities, sustainable living and alternatives to violence. MCC currently serves in more than 45 countries with over 475 partners.

This salaried full-time position directly supervises 4 - 5 staff and provides general oversight and support to 70 to 100 volunteers, cultivating and maintaining a team approach. The ability to work on Saturday and some evenings will be required. Legal eligibility to work in Canada is required.

There are currently 2 MCC Thrift shops in Swift Current: Swift Current Furniture and Swift Current Thrift. The two shops are in the process of amalgamating and relocating to a new location to operate as the Swift Current MCC Thrift shop. This role will be key in supporting the amalgamation and relocation, by providing advice and input to MCCS and the Swift Current Shop Board on how the new shop will be designed and set up. The role will provide some oversight on the renovations, and manage and direct the move into the new building.

Retail and Customer Service:

  • Proven leadership in a retail environment and/or warehouse environment.
  • Excels in a fast-paced environment with the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines.
  • Ability to create and refine systems and processes for increased efficiencies.
Communication:
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English including reading, writing and analysis.
  • Ability to communicate in an articulate, engaging manner with tact and diplomacy when speaking with staff, the public, volunteers, colleagues, and supporters
  • Ability to set, communicate and enforce policies
General:
  • Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent education and training) and 6 years of related experience.
  • 2-3 years managing a Thrift shop experience
  • Excellent organizational and relational skills with good attention to detail.
  • Commitment to the operating principles of MCC Thrift and the values of MCC including a heart for justice and active peacemaking.
  • Intermediate working knowledge of MS Office programs including Excel, Outlook, Word and PowerPoint. General comfort with computers including ability to learn and adopt new software.
  • Familiarity and comfort with computer programs that facilitate remote connectivity (e.g. MS Teams, Zoom, etc.).
  • Knowledge of Point-of-Sale systems and reporting
  • Required to work non-standard hours, including evenings and Saturdays.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. and exert 11 to 25 lbs. of force frequently.
  • May require 6 or more hours of intermittent standing or walking in a standard workday.
  • Ability to repeatedly bend or stoop to floor level shelves and able to reach upper shelves with use of a stool or a ladder when necessary.
  • Ability to travel domestically, especially within Saskatchewan.
Key Responsibilities
Duties:
  • Demonstrate a high level of integrity, reflecting Christian respect and Christ’s unconditional love through daily interactions with staff, volunteers, donors and customers.
  • Communicate the MCC mission and values and the mission of the Thrift shops in a positive manner to staff, volunteers, donors and the community at large.
  • Model non-violent peace-making in the workplace, community and church.
  • Be accountable to a local Christian congregation.
  • Participate in MCC workshops and Thrift Shop gatherings.

Managerial Responsibilities:
Some of the following tasks may be delegated to staff and / or volunteers, although the General Manager is ultimately responsible.
General
  • Provide vision and overall direction for the Swift Current MCC Thrift shop based on the approved shop budget, workplan, and on the MCCS Thrift workplan, including developing, monitoring, and evaluating project plans and annual plans for the shop.
  • Provide supervision, coaching, evaluation, support, training, and development for staff and volunteers.
  • Manage and direct staff and volunteers including scheduling regular staff meetings and creating the monthly staff and volunteer schedule.
  • Ensure that the shop is neat, clean and attractive. Ensure safety measures are in place for volunteers, customers and staff.
  • Recruit volunteer staff. Schedule volunteers and coordinate their work, training and enrichment. Maintain a current volunteer list with contact information.
  • Oversee activities carried out in the shop workroom: sorting, pricing and recycling.
  • Oversee all aspects of merchandising, including shop layout, displays and signage; window and special features; quality and price control, establish and maintain price lists.
Administration
  • Develop and monitor shop budgets, tracking key indicators, spending, revenue, trends, etc. and managing sales growth.
  • Maintain all office and financial work including accounts payable and receivable, financial and business information, daily cash deposits and reconciliation.
  • Ensure appropriate records are kept and current, including finance, evaluations, job descriptions, and risk management documentation.

Communication
  • Participate in public speaking engagements to promote donations, shopping and volunteering as well as the general work of MCC.
  • Actively participate in MCCS Thrift Network meetings

Health and Safety
  • Responsible for all aspects of safety of the facility.
  • Ensure yourself, staff and volunteers adhere to company policies and legal regulations.
  • Ensure staff comply with the risk management policy and procedures and foster a culture where risks are identified and mitigated.
  • Support and direct the effective implementation of MCCS’s health and safety policies, procedures and regulations.
  • Ensure employees adhere to company policies and legal regulations.\

Miscellaneous
  • Attend to other miscellaneous duties that may arise from time to time in the work environment.

Note: Physical labour is involved in this position, sometimes requiring the ability to lift upwards of 50 pounds.

Assignment Narrative:

The General Manager will be responsible for the daily operation of the Thrift Shop, ensuring that the Shop runs efficiently and effectively in harmony with the vision and goals of Mennonite Central Committee Saskatchewan. The Manager will provide oversight and support for staff and volunteers, working within a team approach. The Manager is accountable to the MCC Saskatchewan Thrift Manager and Swift Current Board. This position requires a self-starter who can make decisions while being flexible and adaptable. Must be able to work with a team of volunteers.

Location Description


Saskatchewan has approximately 1 million people, 35% living in rural areas. The majority are 2nd-to-5th generation Canadians of European descent; 15% are of First Nations origin, 5% Metis. About 700 people arrive in the province each year as refugees.

The Swift Current MCC Thrift shop provides quality used clothing and furniture at reasonable prices to a growing market. The General Manager is responsible for the financial health of the shop, including annual revenue, expenses and applicable planning and reporting. This leadership role ensures the Swift Current MCC Thrift Shop is operated in accordance with the policies and guidelines established by MCCS and works with staff, volunteers and the local Shop Board to create friendly, caring presence in the community, showing value and respect to all, promoting faithful stewardship, and raising funds for MCC. The General Manager will demonstrate servant leadership and will ensure the shop is in harmony with the vision and goals of MCCS, and MCC Thrift.
