Summary
The General Manager, under the direction of the (President and Vice President), is primarily responsible for overseeing SBC Firemaster’s day-to-day plant operations. As an experienced manager in the manufacturing industry, he or she will draw on a broad, up-to-date knowledge of the forestry and manufacturing industry. In conjunction with the President and Vice President, the General Manager will deliver on both short-term and long-term objectives for the company.
The General Manager will ensure that company objectives are achieved by guaranteeing that all necessary resources are available and allocated correctly and that processes and protocols are in place, properly communicated, and followed. The General Manager will serve as an intermediary between employees and executive management and provide leadership and guidance to all direct reports. A key element of this position is the ability to assemble, develop and motivate an effective team that will be directly responsible for all aspects of procuring, producing, stocking and shipping SBC Firemaster’s products. This job will be required to be full time on site at our Princeton Facility.
Job Duties
Planning and Goals
- Clearly understand the objectives for the company and use appropriate means to achieve them including formulating policies, motivating staff, and creating unique solutions to challenges;
- Work with the executive team to establish, approve, and achieve annual department budgets (R&M, capital acquisition, manufacturing process R&D, new product R&D as examples).
- Responsible for working with vendors, maintaining relationships, negotiating contracts, developing purchasing strategies and ensuring that deliveries are timed correctly and costs are optimized.
- Review financial statements, operational reports, and other performance data to measure productivity and goal achievements. Strategically and proactively take action to improve when results are not met;
- Identify, analyze, and implement cost reduction strategies that contribute to the production facility’s efficient and profitable operation;

- The production environment will always be changing and the Board of Directors have expectations that the General Manager will always be thinking about efficiency gains, new production concepts and any other means to facilitate this growth.
- Understand that this growth will require the development of new products within SBC Firemaster’s core market and that the General Manager will be expected to determine how best to make these market-leading products and incorporate manufacturing into the Princeton production activities.
Employees
- Create areas of responsibility within the production area and assign individual leaders with clearly defined goals and responsibilities. Measuring, reporting and acknowledging the results of each leader is a key aspect of the General Manager’s role.
- Set staffing levels, skill requirements and training requirements that will be required to support production plans and company objectives. Work with the Operations Manager, HR, and Production Foreman to recruit, select, coach, and discipline staff and managers to increase effectiveness;
- Draw on professional experiences to oversee all safety programs and achieve measurable continuous improvement.
Operations
- Oversee activities directly related to the manufacturing and supply of products;
- Understand the challenges in each area of production and take measurable action to resolve these challenges while achieving budgets and operational performance metrics;
- Clear obstacles to make sure that all customer orders are always filled, despite challenges presented from spikes in demand due to weather, spikes in demand from acquiring new customers and/or other production challenges;
- Manage the quality assurance program to ensure that all Firemaster products are built to the highest standard in order to maintain our position as North America’s largest producer of bundled firewood.
General
- Protect the organization’s value by keeping all protected and proprietary information confidential;
- Represent the company, or delegate representatives to act on behalf of the company, in negotiations or at other official functions. Always maintain professionalism, tact, diplomacy, and sensitivity to portray the company in a positive manner;
- Become an expert in all aspects of firewood manufacturing, understand who our competition is and their manufacturing process. Follow emerging technology with the goal of bringing this technology into our manufacturing process in order to benefit from a competitive advantage;
- Keep personal job knowledge up-to-date by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; and participating in professional organizations;
- Accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests set forth by the Board of Directors.
Qualifications:
- Bachelors Degree in Engineering, automation, robotics or related field.
- 7+ years of experience in a leadership role, specifically in an industrial environment is preferred
- Experience or education in business
- Knowledge of lean manufacturing or similar
- Experience or background in automation or technology
- Demonstrated problem solving skills
- Strong communication skills with the ability to communicate using various forms
- Goal driven and results oriented
- Ability to work well in dynamic teams
- Ability to assist, motivate and lead teams while adhering to the desired outcomes as detailed by the executive team
- Computer literacy is required
Schedule:
- It is anticipated that normal working will be Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm. There will be times when additional hours will be required, but it is anticipated that 45 hours per week will be typical with occasional weeks at 50.
- Limited travel may be required
